I think it was OP's 'holier-than-thou' attitude for people who aren't willing to waste an hour every week to save a couple bucks that has everyone reacting.

SpuGen 03-22-2012 12:46 AM

OP makes 40k a year, and can't afford gas?

Lots of people make way less, and still manage to make car payments, rent, and bills.
Quick example: Lots of single income families live off on 40k/yr. OP lives at home and complains about $9.

Who's the one with poor financial planning?

It adds up.

You fill up 3 times in the States, the next tank is pretty much free. In Canada is the same as filling 4.

Assume...

Gas in Vancouver right now is $1.40
Gas in Point Roberts right now is let's say $1.21

So for the Jerry Cans:

Buy 40L in Point Roberts and you only save $7.60 per can. Just round up to $8.

Buy three cans you save $24. So it's more like fill up SIX times to save $48 and now you are getting close to getting a free tank.

But more importantly:

Assume your Civic takes 50L to fill up. Your fuel mileage is 9L/100 kms. And it's 30kms one-way from Richmond to Point Roberts.

Cost to fill up in Canada = $70.
Cost to fill up in PR = $60.50.
It will cost you $7.05 to drive to and from Point Roberts.

$60.50 + $7.05 - $70 = $2.45 total savings

At least now you can see if it's truly worth it or not.

see.lai 03-22-2012 10:55 AM

It's worth it if you have a package waiting for you at the post office because you'll be taking advantage of the free/low-cost shipping and the gas.

It's too bad the groceries at Pt.Roberts are similar in pricing to Vancouver. Other than that, yeah I guess you can say it's better to fill up here.

I feel like I'm saving quite a bit though, as I'm filling up with premium. I forgot what premium costs in Pt.Roberts, but it's more than $1.50 in Vancouver..

Supposedly, it costs me $6-7 to drive there and back. I still save $13, which is more than what I make in an hour. (Keep in mind, I don't mind driving. I'm still a student as well.)

Gas prices will only rise, right? It doesn't hurt to save a bit of money. :concentrate:

Is it worth it to drive for cheaper gas? - The Globe and Mail

Use this link to calculate your savings, I took this off one of the RS members so I can't take any credit for it.

This is one of the few pros of me living in Ladner since it's barely out of my way haha. Also! Pro tip! If you go to International Marketplace, you can buy beer for about half the price of what you would pay in Canada and if you buy eggs a flat of Jumbo eggs, they're only about $4.50 IIRC.

But in the end... I still live in Ladner... :alone:

Sky_High 03-22-2012 08:20 PM

Spoiler!

A Civic might not get the 5.0L/100km economy as its official number claims....but once you factor in the highway driving, and maybe use a number like 6L/100km....OP might just be able to save $5 for his hour of time :awwyeah:

no_clue 03-22-2012 09:12 PM

driving to the united states for the sole purpose of buying gas lol

Please add the cost of wear&tear and the most valuable one, TIME.
Also variables such as higher risk of getting into a car accident, or a windshield crack as you are driving a further distance/highway.

Not worth it, even for premium gas.

UFO 03-22-2012 10:15 PM

^do people still go on drives or cruises anymore? All of the above applies to group drives/cruises, except there is no cheap gas at the destination, yet nobody seems to mind.

To each his own.

Someone should organize an RS cheap gas drive/cruises, then maybe people will get their panties untied from the knot.

Spectre_Cdn 03-22-2012 10:45 PM

^ RS cruise along 99/George Massey/Hwy 17 + BBQ meet at Lighthouse Marine Park in Pt Roberts? Cheap gas and parcel-pick-ups on the side?

:accepted:

The park/beach there is actually quite nice for picnics and bbq's and there's ample parking. You can even camp overnight, across from the park :alonehappy:

idk my friends made this for me http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instanc...x/16899835.jpg

Are the gas stations open 24/7? I know the stores close but what about the pumps

There is one station (Can-Am?) that has 24 hour unattended pumps.

Glove 05-18-2012 10:51 AM

thats a pretty cool calculator,

I fill up my civic and bring two 20 litre jerries with me,

I go to costco to fill up, its usually around 3.80 a galon, which converts to roughly 1 dollar a litre,

filling up my tank + 2 jerries costs me around 60 bones down there,

filling it up here at 1.40 a litre could cost me around 90 bucks,

the savings are substantial, I havent filled up at a canadian gas station in 6 months, I just go down every 2 weeks and fill up down there.

I suspect the government will do something about it soon though, the lineup at the costco gas station is retarded, every day of the week, all BC lisence plates.

Actually I see the tanker there all the time, and I actually asked the driver, how many trips he makes to that costco on a daily basis,

he said he makes anywhere from 3-6 trips DAILY

Doubt it. This isn't exactly a new phenomenon... people have been driving south to get gas for decades.

GGnoRE 05-18-2012 01:37 PM

They already rape us with gas taxes in BC, the least they can do is let us drive to the states for gas...

Glove 05-18-2012 01:56 PM

wasnt there an article posted not too long ago about that though?

The ammount of people going south for gas is increasing, directly proportional to the rising cost of gas up here,

and the government knows it, I think the article said that they will try and heavily tax people on any fuel in jerry's, im gonna try and find it

edit:

well I couldnt find it,

but if everyone starts going south to fill up, thats a lot of revenue lost for translink, the new transit and bridge systems.

BC will definitly do something about it eventually

TypeRNammer 05-18-2012 03:13 PM

New1130 did an article on people crossing the border for gas.

They mentioned someone crossed back bringing back at least 400 bucks of gas lol.

EDIT: http://www.news1130.com/news/local/article/356708--canadians-filling-jerry-cans-across-the-border

People crossing back with 10 to 15 jerry cans!

InvisibleSoul 05-18-2012 04:01 PM

Oh, well that's a different story... because gas in jerry cans is - and always has been - subject to customs. They could definitely be more proactive about making people pay for customs on gas in portable containers... I was saying they wouldn't do anything about people going south to put gas in their vehicles.

A$AProcky 05-18-2012 05:21 PM

I live 10 mins from the border so I go regularly. I fill up once or twice a week and save about $20-$25 filling up with premium (costs $1.25/L compared to almost $1.60/L). Takes about 30 mins back and forth with no traffic for me so its worth it.

If I was only saving $10 I dont think I'd bother wasting my time but I save at least $80 a month.

Gas taxes 'cash cow' for gov't

6.67 cents per litre carbon tax.

8.5 cents per litre B.C. tax.

10 cents per litre federal tax.

17 cents per litre TransLink tax.

Five-per-cent harmonized sales tax.
