Ronin 09-10-2013 12:35 PM

Not just London...but that's where we're starting.

Hondaracer 09-10-2013 07:23 PM

When I had fish and chips in London at like 3 different places all of them had bones in them? Uhg

I didn't have any bones at this place. It's marketed as a "posh" chippy so I'd expect some attention to detail.

London stop #2.

The Gun is a gastropub that's been around more or less 250 years, a favorite of British hero Lord Horatio Nelson. Nowadays, it's a critically acclaimed example of modern British cuisine.

Beans for breakfast is weird but works! Full English breakfast at a little cafe outside St. Paul's Cathedral.

How do you find the places to go in London etc?

Me and my GF will be in Paris for a week in may and looking to plan all our meals at various restaurants, I have a few fairly well off friends who have been a few times but mostly refer to like Michelin 3 stars etc where dinners are starting at 200+ euros

Kerbisher & Malt I found by searching "Best fish and chips in London". The Gun I found via Urbanspoon as well as searching "Best modern British restaurant in London".

Degustibus I found completely randomly. I like to take a few days in any city I visit to just wander around without any direction and just shoot. The streets were pretty empty and boring and I was getting hungry and it was the first place I saw.

The last three were also random finds as I was looking around London but with my family.

You don't need a lot of money to eat good food. Sure, it helps but there are a lot of great places that don't cost much money. Watch Bourdain episodes, Google around a little and you'll find places that locals go to for good food.

Ronin 09-18-2013 11:13 PM

Oh, and the restaurants I'll be posting for Copenhagen, Helsinki, Berlin, St. Petersburg, and Iceland are all either random walk-ins or part of a tour.

Taking a little intermission from my Europe restaurants. New post over at Vancity Buzz, looking at Tuc Craft Kitchen in Downtown Vancouver near Gastown.

I was there last summer for drinks and took a peek at the food menu and it looked amazing and put it on my to-try list.

Then I went back this year and the menu seemed have all those interesting items removed.
I wanted to try the foie gras brulee dammit!
They had a lobster promo that they sent out via email.
So I got that and a couple of dishes to split between friends.
I was entirely underwhelmed at each and everything that came out of the kitchen.
I had heard that Alex had a co-chef or something that left?

Do you know if this is yet another menu revamp?
If so, I would be willing to give it another go once Alex gets his stuff sorted out.
I wanted to visit him when he ran his underground kitchen, it would be shame for me to write off Cache.

Read your article.

Surprised fries as canapes could still hold up to being hot and crispy.
Well done to them.

Lobster is expensive, so not surprised it's not a heaping amount.
However, were the rolls not buttered and toasted on the outside?

And damn, now I'm going to make some clam chowder.

Seems like you get around.
Do you have a top place to get a poutine?

StylinRed 10-18-2013 03:34 AM

Spud Shack in New West makes a pretty badass poutine.

I love British TV and movies. I'll check it out.

My friends and I went on a 6-week long backpacking trip back in '06. We did get on each other's nerves at times but it was a f'n blast.

I have one more short London post before we move onto Copenhagen and Berlin.
