I would like to thank my parents for...

What would you like to thank your parents for?

I'll start.
1. For paying for private school
2. For driving me to early hockey practice
3. For giving me a roof to live under and food to eat everyday
4. For making me sign up for baseball all those years ago
5. For teaching me how to drive

I thank them for sticking it out through the difficult years and supporting the family. God only knows how hard you guys busted your asses, before coming to Canada and after coming here. Thank you for being here for me, and raising me to be the kid i am. Thank you to my grandparents too, and the rest of my family.

SoulCrusher 03-24-2012 10:28 PM

... for helping me become the person I am today.

Preemo 03-24-2012 10:29 PM

I would like to thank them for beating the shit out of me when I was a punk teenager. I now realize all the important things that really matter in life and all the important lessons they tried to teach me.

I still fear slippers and fly swatters to this day.

Thanks to my parents for putting up with me.

MG1 03-25-2012 12:38 AM

I'd like to thank my parents for not spoiling my children like most grandparents do. The kids hear it from me as well as their grandparents, except they're a lot nicer about it. I can't wait to be a grandparent myself, but it ain't looking good atm.

:yuno: get married and have bambino's!

My god, my mom was awesome. After my dad left, it was the 2 of us maintaining a farm by ourselves, with no money and little help. We had to go and buy hay with a mustang and instead of breaking down at the side of the road, and causing me to lose hope, she starts laughing. Just laughing hysterically at the pure stupidity of what we were doing. We had a sheep, one-a singular sheep and it needed to be sheared so we take a sheep for a walk down the road to another farm to get it clipped. In a freak spring snow storm. Just in case you were wondering, are sheep like dogs? They aren't. They really don't like having some bullshit harness made by a kid out of whatever rope you could find either.

One night I was outside, with snow falling splitting wood by hand so that we could have heat that night. And we still managed to laugh about it. Fuck, what are you going to do? I just put any rage I was feeling at the experience into the axe and nuked more wood. I would have killed to have lived somewhere with a nat.gas hook up that night.

Those years shaped so much of my philosophy and fundamental thinking that her strength then is my strength now.

I think we stayed for about 18 months there by ourselves and everything that my dad would hack together to make work(picture scotty without the accent) just died...we had a chimney fire which was the only time I saw her lose it during the whole time as she was sitting there saying, "let it burn, I have insurance!" while I was left to deal with the dumb fuck community fire department that I believe shared one collective brain among them all. The roof started to leak...the water purifier just kicked it, the septic system over flowed, the other chimney had to be fixed...it was just ridiculous. Every time, I just kept waiting for her to lose it and holy shit, she came close but continued to hold it together.

Then, I found out at school that the once star pupil was failing english during all this. All I pictured was her finally going over the deep end, so I pulled my weight. I went and talked to the teacher and just lost it. I can't remember exactly what I said but I guess the whole situation put me over the edge. He gave me some make up assignments to get into "crappy, but not failing".

A troubling side note was I had that happen with 2 teachers that I knew well that year, where I basically let them in on what life had turned into these days, and that one basically ignored it, and the other at least acknowledged it by saying, "that sucks, but what you really need to focus on are your priorities." and went about his day. I lost a lot of respect for public education during all this. If you have a kid standing in front of you, screaming for help...fucking put down the coffee! He went on to embarrass me in class and say in class that "there are a few here with the real potential to fail the final exam" Thanks for the motivation! I didn't fail the final btw, and got a better mark than he had ever given me. It was an IB exam, so the final was marked outside the school. Others would have been disappointed with the mark(as I would have been in different scenarios) but I took it as a sign of excellence.

So I did my part and managed to pull off acceptable grades, and did my part of keeping it off the plate for my mom. I think if she actually knew how shitty I was doing it would have killed the spirit, as in, what are we doing this for if its not working.

For that time, it really turned into "us vs. world"...we realized that some friends in the community really weren't and we found new friends that were amazing. Family came through so much...if it weren't for my aunt, we would have been wards of the state.

I think a lot of kids have parents that turn to drinking, or just give up but my mom man, she just kept giving it. I think she just got to the point where the challenges just became obstacles. She finally finds a way to get heat that I don't need to cut in the house and they had problems installing it and I'm serious, every time I was just waiting for her to say fuck it, and instead, she grabs the god damned ax and goes outside. They tell her they'll be back tomorrow and she just shakes her head and goes for the wood pile.
