Looking to buy a used 335i
 
Hey there, I'm currently looking to buy a used 335i coupe, but was wondering if its safe to buy one from private owners since I've heard many stories about the hpfp failing. An HPFP issue would be indicated on the service history of the car right? Also, would the replacement for one be free from a dealership if it does happen, even without warranty? I've heard that a failing pump could be a potentially dangerous problem as it could happen without warning, any input from 335 owners would be welcome. Would it just be better off looking for a cpo from a dealership?

the pump has been a regular problem for the BMWers, have you thought of a 328i.? about the same w/o turbo

I bought mine from a private owner and only got my fuel pump fixed once so far. Bmw will take care of the fuel pump up to 200,000km

I'm on my original one.
My parent's have had it go on them on most of their cars with the N54 though.
I was there when one of them went; I wouldn't say it's dangerous at all...
Check engine light comes on, or if you've got iDrive, it'll tell you something along the lines of "Engine Malfunction, Reduced Power". Basically you'll be in "limp mode", engine will just be running on reduced power, so you'll still be able to drive it to the dealership.
And I wouldn't say it happens without warning. Prior to a HPFP issue, you'll experience long cranks before the engine turns, basically slow starts.
My cousins and friends who've had the N54 have been able to notice long cranks and gone to the dealership to have the HPFP replaced before a failure.
My parents are old and I guess they just don't pay attention or don't notice a difference.
And if it's already been replaced, it'll show up in the service history.
Be warned though, I know people who've gone to 3 of the local dealerships, had it replaced and still going strong with the replacement, but people who went to 1 of the local dealerships had to keep going back for multiple replacements; not sure what the issue here is, but something I'd keep in mind if you find a car with multiple replacements and wonder why or a car with a very recent replacement.
I haven't heard of anyone having to pay for the replacement, but as with most things ymmv.

I had my HPFP replaced once on my N54 from a recall - been running great since. You'll notice a jerking motion in the car upon acceleration from a dead stop if the HPFP has some sort of problems.

The potential HPFP issue is something that you'll just have to deal with if you plan on picking up a 335i.

its not just the hpfp youre going to worry about with 335i...many i kno have had their turbos go

they have a lot of problems like dude before me said read on e90post a lot of info there.

also if u are hell bent on getting one make sure its 08+ with the oil cooler

Well if you get a N55 i think the turbo's and the hpfp are alot more reliable...

Find a used 2011

Ouch! Are you finding that your M6 is more reliable than the 335i?

yeah i've had it for 2 years and it's been awesome, not a single hiccup.

Stay away if you're on a limited budget.
I had 2 friends with 335i's, and a co-worker with an X6 3.5i. They were in the shop so often it was nearly a monthly thing -- and this was during warranty when they'd have free loaner cars. My buddy actually said that he had visited the dealership for yellow Check Engine faults more regularly than getting his haircut.

It's not the hpfp you need to worry about, but more so the turbos and injectors if you are out of warranty. Buy one that's CPO'ed if you can.

The mod potential is crazy on these cars. They make 400whp with cheap basic bolt-ons.

I've leased my 335i since 2009 and I've had my HPFP replaced twice, nav screen go red, and just recently the catalytic converters replaced. It was in the shop for almost a month waiting for parts from Germany.

I'll be honest, I love the car. Looks good, drives great, lots of power. But I'll never own the car because once it's out of warranty, it's way too much to maintain. I owned a 2004 CLK500 in the past and that thing was a money pit just because it's a german car. Once my lease is done I'll get another one, won't bother with the buyout. Besides it's better for me to lease since I can write off portions for tax purposes.

But if you insist on buying a 335i, do as Racingspirit says and buy a CPO'd car.

and sedan! personally i think e90 sedans look nicer than the coupes. but thats just me.

thanks for the responses guys, still looking for the right car atm however. I actually sold my e90 328i just recently in order to buy this car lol, I personally prefer the look of the coupe

on a 09 335i lease
dropped off my car at the dealership last week for some engine problem....they told me they have to replace the entire turbo/muffler system and it will take them at least another week to fix the problem... (told me something like 20hr+ work :heckno:)

I actually love the car when I first got it and was planning to keep it after the lease expire...The car was flawless in the first 1-2 years, but so many problem started coming up after 2 years....there is no way I will keep the car after the warranty expired

I also had the HFPF repalced once and some engine misfire issues
I remember receiving some letter about them extending HFPF related warranty to something like 120,000km if that's your concern

I think it is to be expected that new drivetrain setup to have issues.. It is common with BMW when they introduce a new technology.. eg their V8, VANOS, iDrive etc etc.. I am sure you guys have an inkling before you went out and got the car with the N54.

im at 90,000km on my 07 335i, am i lucky to not have these issues or is it just a matter of time before i get all these problems?
