Ahhh, Spring.

Some of us mark the season of renewal by cleaning our homes from top to bottom. Others add pastels to their wardrobe. In the Eastern Chinese city of Dongyang, they eat “virgin boy eggs” — hard-boiled eggs marinated and simmered in urine, according to Reuters.

Residents praise the local delicacy for its ability to prevent colds, increase circulation and boost vitality.

“These eggs cooked in urine are fragrant,” said Ge Yaohua, 51, who owns one of the more popular “virgin boy eggs” stalls. “Our family has them for every meal. In Dongyang, every family likes eating them."

Vendors collect buckets of boy's urine from from local schools and homes in order to make the unusual broth.

The eggs are soaked in the urine and then heated over a stove. Then they are taken out of the shells and put back in the urine to simmer.

It takes an entire day to make a batch, and one egg sells for 23 cents, twice the price of a regualr boiled egg.

“It’s so delicious that I can eat 10 eggs a day,” a woman surnamed Liu told Shanghai Daily. “I am addicted."

Wu Yunhua at Dongyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine told the Daily that the urine “diminishes the internal heat of the human body.”

But a traditional doctor said frowns upon the centuries-old delicacy.

“After all, it is waste from the body,” said Huang Jian, chief urologist at Jinhua Central Hospital.

“The smell kills me,” a Mr. Li told the Qianjiang Evening Post. “I feel like throwing up at the thought of it. It stinks.”

it's not THAT surprising considering century-old eggs used to be soaked in horse urine in the old days.

and wasn't there a stupid therapy that came out of japan in the early 2000's to drink your own urine?

I feel like if a person in china hears something related to health, that person will take it to heart as if that bit of info has been passed down for generations. It's the only explanation i have for all the crazy things they believe; my mom included.
