The only way that police can do anything to you is if they have either;
A warrant
Reasonable suspicion of a crime.
If they have neither, then they have no right to tap into your phone calls. The only action police are allowed to take otherwise is the verification of a driver's license, which you must produce at a traffic stop no matter what.
Under those prerequisites;
They do not have the right to search your person.
They do not have the right to search your property (land or object).
They do not have the right to invade your privacy (tapping calls).
Any action taken that infringes on these is a violation of the Charter of Rights and any evidence they find will be void in court.
In retrospect, every citizen should be an informed citizen, aware of their rights and the cases where those rights are being infringed upon.

+1 on not associating with any criminals. every job nowadays requires a criminal record check. and if you're looking to get a job at a sensitive location or get a job where integrity is the first and foremost qualification, those criminal friends will cost you your chance at that job.
worse, if you and your criminal friends are consistently being checked together by the gang task force at bars, even if you haven't done anything illegal, you can bet that the cops pulling you over for a broken taillight are going to be extra careful with you.
