are the authorities allowed to tap into phone calls?

Does anyone have information about this? How does tapping work, would they have to sit in front of your house and listen or can they chime in from anywhere?

reason I am asking this because a friend calls me up saying he got caught for some illegal activity and the police confiscated his cell phone and has my number which I am afraid they suspect me of doing criminal activities just because my number was on his phone.. Can the police decide to listen to someone like that without proof?

The past month I have been getting unknown/private calls non stop and recently decided to pick up. All I can hear is people in the background and then they hang up. I decided to purchase an app for my phone to unmask the blocked calls but they haven't called again yet so I have no idea. I am not paranoid because I am doing anything bad, just don't want my privacy listened on when im on the phone with the GF or family/relatives. Thanks

Unless your friend's phone only consist of 10 contacts in it...what makes you think you'll be targeted by the police? Pretty sure you either annoyed someone...or signed up for shit load of telemarketing spam to be receiving all those phone calls. Afterall, the police DOES have better things to do. I'm sure they would rather sit at Tim Horton pigging on donuts....then to call you nonstop........if you're really not doing any illegal activities.

nvm, Don't know why I am asking on a forum.

MindBomber 04-10-2012 03:03 AM

It sounds like you needed to revaluate the group of people you associate with, considering you had a similar experience in the past and now you have reason to believe the police are tapping your phone line.

Hot Karl 04-10-2012 03:04 AM

Let's not act like every single cop is a beacon of ethics. They take shots in the dark all the time. They call it police work. That being said they wouldn't be calling and hanging up. I'm all for policing the police but you are just being paranoid.

bcrdukes 04-10-2012 03:33 AM

They need a warrant before they can tap your phone calls.

Simple as that.

Autorice 04-10-2012 03:46 AM

they don't need to tap your calls right away. they can check how frequently he called you and visa versa. they can read all of his text messages sent and received. then they can check your past history, employment history, criminal history then evaluate if you are a viable suspect in any criminal activity. if anything smells iffy to an officer then yes they will start to tap you. no they won't call you from a blocked number and you cannot notice any change in call quality if they are tapping your phone. yes they need a warrant to begin taping your calls but any judge would authorize it if the officer presents their reasoning correctly.

Autorice 04-10-2012 03:48 AM

for a safe rule of thumb, all officers call from a blocked number, even on their private mobile phones. if they want to chat with you, they may want to clarify some issues regarding your relationship with your friend.

hes right, the police need a warrant and reasonable grounds before they begin investigating you. Besides.. if you've done nothing wrong, nothing to fear right?

If you read most of the cell agreements you sign there is always a clause that allows "authority/law enforcement" to use your data as they deem necessary.

they do, technically, but they dont let that stop them ;)

and the police wouldnt be prank calling you.... if they call you they'll pretend to want to purchase illegal goods/drugs from you and see if you bite

and you likely wouldnt hear a call center in the background either... sounds like you've been called by some telemarketers :P

Mancini 04-10-2012 08:54 AM

You believe it's authorities prank calling you? Really?

Stop hanging out with shady characters.

parm104 04-10-2012 10:47 AM

BlackZRoadster has a lawyer that can help you. You'll probably get a really cheap computer out of it too. Or at least a gift certificate to Tiger Direct.

sulos 04-10-2012 10:50 AM

I have friends who know friends who are tapping your phone. Better change your number

GGnoRE 04-10-2012 10:51 AM

Police don't want to waste time eavesdropping on you talking to your gf, unless you guys are talking funny on the phone
