Normally, you read top to bottom. Not bottom to top.

If they detonate it over the Comox Valley no one (who matters) will care. The people living there will comment on how its "Rainin' Chinamen" before being smothered by debris. Life will go on.

Hondaracer 04-10-2012 05:17 PM

^ your point?

Teriyaki 04-10-2012 05:22 PM

Hopefully it is just a hoax. Even then, it is a bit concerning when its a Canadian origin plane, not even bound for the states and there are bomb threats.

bensta 04-10-2012 05:25 PM

scanbc on twitter is not a hoax lol. it was just on global news too.

FlightAware > Korean Air Lines Co. (KE) #72 Flight Tracker

Pretty sure he was referring to that he hopes the threat on board is a hoax by some moron.

Not that uncommon for flights that have reported security issues to be diverted to the nearest military base or closest airport that can handle whatever the perceived situation/threat.

makes sense.. facepalm. sorry teriyaki

Korean Air jetliner makes emergency landing at military base in Canada - CNN.com
Quote:

(CNN) -- NORAD jet fighters intercepted a Korean Air passenger jet and escorted it to a safe emergency landing at a military base on Vancouver Island in British Columbia after the airline received a bomb threat, officials said Tuesday.
Two F-15 fighter jets escorted the Boeing 777 to 19 Wing Comox on Vancouver Island in British Columbia because of a threat associated with the aircraft, a NORAD spokeswoman said.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m ET), said Maj. Holly Apostoliuk of NORAD in Canada.
The F-15s that conducted the intercept were scrambled from Portland, Oregon, she said.
Penny Pfaelzer, a spokeswoman for Korean Air, said the airline received a bomb threat at its Los Angeles call center.
The incident occurred 25 minutes after Flight KE072 took off from Vancouver International Airport, when the U.S. call center received a threat that an explosive was on board the aircraft, she said. "After discussion with the related departments, we decided to turn the aircraft," she said.
The plane landed at Comox, which is 70 miles northwest from Vancouver.
The airline will decide about continuing the flight after discussion with the airport and the related authorities, she said.

edit: nevermind should have read the whole thing i thought it was simply the airline that was threatened and not this particular flight

damn scary

twitchyzero 04-10-2012 07:34 PM

This may seem obvious to most people, but how does a pair fighter jets escorting an airliner with a bomb going to help? shoot it down if it was indeed hijacked?

daytona675 04-10-2012 07:42 PM

^ most likely so, before it gets to a populated area.

dc5typeS 04-10-2012 07:43 PM

The F-15s that conducted the intercept were scrambled from Portland.
Where is the Canadian Air force ?

SolidPenguin 04-10-2012 07:50 PM

Maybe too far away? Wheres the nearest Canadian squadron of CF18s? Cold Lake?

They rotate between Cold Lake and Comox, maybe they are currently in AB.

b0unce. [?] 04-10-2012 08:05 PM

Heard about this via FB today off my cousin. Him and his family were on that plane.

SOP is to scramble fighters to escort any aircraft that is suspicious, reports of a threat or in distress. Usually the objective is to gain eyes on target on the aircraft, the fighter pilots can access the situation, report flight irregularities before ground tower or radar can tell, report any damage to the aircraft to ground and the aircrafts pilots and prevent the aircraft from diverting course.

In the event an aircraft is deemed a threat to a populated area, the fighters will shoot down the aircraft.

NORAD is responsible for North American aerospace/airspace defense, joint Canada/US, the nearest NORAD base is in Alaska but if deemed a threat they will scramble jets out of the Portland Air National Guard base, where a F-15 unit is stationed, to intercept quicker.

StylinRed 04-10-2012 10:03 PM

its on the news right now

Korean Air had a threat called in yesterday too but the plane hadn't taken off yet so they delayed the flight

looks like the plane had already flown past the Queen Charlotte Islands before turning around

yray 04-10-2012 10:06 PM

Must be pretty dope to blast to Charlotte island from Portland at mach 1.5/2

JSALES 04-10-2012 10:10 PM

I never even heard of this and I was at the airport today working. It must be cool to see two F-15 fighter jets escorting you though, just saying.
