Then afterwards you could try setting up a stripped down Linux build for them with giant icons for internet, shutdown, note pad...etc.

this is pretty much my mom :lol

It's like when you had to walk to school on your own, for the first time. You have to teach them not to give out their information, be wary of strangers offering treats, and to look both ways when crossing.

teaching my mom to use the internet is definately a test of patience.

I literally pull my hair out trying to teach her how to copy and paste and she still doesn't understand

but its cool i'm sure one day i will look back and be glad i spent the time with her no matter how frustrating it is

Internet Explorer on my mom's laptop is always full of bullshit toolbars. Once I get rid of 2-3 toolbars, the screen just seems soo much bigger.

Lesson: When installing, don't just keep on pressing "Next", read and tick off the bullcrap offers to install whatever useless program.

From experience, teaching your parents how to use a computer is best done with an iPad. It's basically built with people like them in mind and it's extremely intuitive.

Worst part about teaching my dad is when he says "dont touch it show me how to do it" :rukidding:

I taught my mom how to use Craigslist. She can only remember what buttons to press or whereabouts to click LOL

When I started reading this thread, my first thought was: An introduction to 2 Girls 1 Cup.

To my dad, who I've never seen anywhere near a computer, every little computer related issue is my fault. Even if its an issue like my mom not knowing how to scan a document to email, my dad blames it on me, believing it was caused by me downloading a virus looking at porn.

I just recently taught my dad on a Asus Transformer tablet, it was much easier to pickup/learn for him and now that he's gotten that down, the transition to a laptop is much easier to learn.

idk lolol i got win 7 ultimate, so windows is already chinese-able but that doesnt help.. mom cant locate the mouse cursor fast enough... and doesnt understand the use of the touch pad for laptops or the mouse... she doesnt know how to type ping ying either so that doesn't help. anyone also want to help me make a account for PPS网络电视官方网站 - PPS陪你看世界.. i can't read it cause my chinese sucks.. the google translated version wont let me make one.. never loads a page..

I found taching my mom to use the computer very easy.. it was teaching her to not CLICK EVERY DAMN THING being the hard part.. I think the first desktop she used, we had about 300 viruses go through it over 2-3 years....

Now she's learned to ask me before opening weird emails and not to click on pop-ups. :fullofwin:

I recently taught my mom how to use a computer to watch her vietnamese concert shows online. She loves it!

Just let your parents keep using the laptop, they will eventually get it. Besides most parents only watch drama! Well tats all my mom does... :lawl:

ie. I thought turning on the monitor was self explanatory...

But, please be patient. Think of all the times your parents had to teach your dumb ass something. I hate it when kids get angry/frustrated with their parents, just be calm and carry on =)

Just a thought...

Apple (Canada) - Apple Retail Store - One to One

I got a mac mini for my parents and got them this one to one service they teach them basically everything on the computer, online pictures videos and what not. Not a bad idea as it's 100 bucks and it saves the frustration.

tool001 04-11-2012 09:48 AM

install UBUNTU for her, u wont need to worry about virus and other crap.

My dad keeps asking if I want to see his strip poker game on his laptop...

I've taught my dad and my gf's mom how to use the computer and while they are not pros they no enough to surf daily, youtube all the time, check email etc.

My strongest advise and also challenges I encountered is first all to be patient. There will be many times where you almost want to bang your head against a wall because they can't understand something simple but you need to keep in mind they have zero experience with this stuff and it will take time.

Second of all is because I don't know how to say a lot of these computer terms in cantonese I had to try and explain things in a way to relate to them.

For example my dad kept thinking that every time you go to a new webpage you had to close the browser and start a new one. I explained to think of the browser as a TV and the address bar is the chanel changer. Surely you don't need to turn off the TV and turn it back on every time you change the chanel. It may not be the best comparison but whatever works for them to understand helps a lot.

Good luck!

wait till they ask you for help, you check out what's going on and it's like a windows blue screen, then they ask you "why did this happen?", and all you can say is "i dont know", then they reply with "i thought you were good with computers?"
