Mom wants to learn how to use a computer finally

So, my mom doesn't know any english.. and wants to enjoy the wonderful internet... anyone have any experience teaching their parents how to use a laptop lol? I'm unsure where to start.. and my chinese is limited to nothing :fullofwin:

RiceIntegraRS 04-10-2012 06:53 PM

Lol, my parents also wanna learn how to use the internet, but ive got no idea where to start

Santofu 04-10-2012 06:58 PM

Teaching your parents how to use internet on a computer = :denied:

Teaching your parents how to use ipad = could work but :considered:

Nevertheless I tried to teach my mom how to use internet on ipad and computer, she was pretty clueless when it comes to computer, however she is sorta catching up with ipad but always forget the internet basics.
But I wouldn't do it again :fuckthatshit: Too much work.

Mr.HappySilp 04-10-2012 07:01 PM

yea ipad is much much easier. My mom have no issue using my ipad but when it comes to using a computer........ AT least she have her own facebook and knows how to skype and read her chinese newspaper.

If she's interested in Chinese dramas, could teach her how to watch those.

Good luck with it, had to do it and she's still having a bit of trouble.

Basically, you have to explain everything the way you would to a Prehistoric Man.

StylinRed 04-10-2012 07:03 PM

same thing here but i just bought her an ipad and turned the language into chinese

just so she can get the gist of things

although all she's done so far is use the apps i downloaded for her instead of surfing the web or searching for apps herself -_-

but she seems appeased so whatever

HonestTea 04-10-2012 07:03 PM

Same boat LOL parents wants to use the computer but it's pretty hard to teach em..although I've taught my mom to use the iPad 2!

qoopoo 04-10-2012 07:04 PM

Tell her to take a class together with her friends, because teaching her yourself will definitely result in frustration and heated arguments. I would know.

LiquidTurbo 04-10-2012 07:05 PM

Get them an iPad.

My dad is 60 and he some how taught himself, I don't have a clue how but hes actually pretty good. Except that hes always on the BCLC site gambling on the slots lol

Jermyzy 04-10-2012 07:06 PM

Check your local community college, sometimes they have beginner/introductory computer courses and I believe some of them are taught in Chinese

Senna4ever 04-10-2012 07:16 PM

Trying to teach my parents how to use a computer was slightly harder than teaching a dead horse how to do calculus. My god, it was a nightmare...they (and I) gave up a few years ago. Now that my mom is gone, I do regret not having more patience with her though. :(

twitchyzero 04-10-2012 07:22 PM

i didn't know how to explain to my mom what buttons you double-click...which ones only require single clicks lol

it's just second-nature to the generations that grew up with it.

Recon604 04-10-2012 07:22 PM

Good luck! I tried teachin my mom how to use the laptop. It fustrated me cuz they always forget what I taught them!

Just let your parents keep using the laptop, they will eventually get it. Besides most parents only watch drama! Well tats all my mom does... :lawl:

yukikaze203 04-10-2012 07:25 PM

i just placed a bunch of different bookmark links on the desktop so i didn't have to teach them what url means :p That being said, they don't know how to go to sites beyond what i supply for them lol

Mike Oxbig 04-10-2012 07:25 PM

good luck!

once your mom gets pro enough she will be a detective and add you on fb or follow you on twitter.

VPL offers one on one training for Computer Basics, I'm think they would have someone who can do it in a language of her choice.

My parents can use a computer, comfortably. My dad already knew how to use a computer from his AutoCAD days, so he didn't need much training. One of my mom's goals, when she retired, was to learn how to use the computer. Once my mom got the hang of using the mouse, she progressed quickly. Now, my mom is on her laptop everyday writing emails, checking stocks, Skype, and just general browsing. My dad only goes on the computer to check emails and download photos from his digital camera.

I just let them do their thing, and told them to call me if they had issues. My mom usually waits until she has a list of questions and problems, then she'll let me know when I go visit them. I can support them remotely with LogMeIn, if needed.

The thing you have to remember is that no detail is insignificant. I had to teach my grandma, that was tough. I had to write down little notes for her.
ie. I thought turning on the monitor was self explanatory...

But, please be patient. Think of all the times your parents had to teach your dumbass something. I hate it when kids get angry/frustrated with their parents, just be calm and carry on =)

yot065 04-10-2012 08:06 PM

lol.. its hard not to get frustrated when you cant speak the mother tongue properly lulzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Your father is close to my age and computers had their beginnings when we were in our college days. Well, personal computers, anyway.

SpuGen 04-10-2012 08:22 PM

Get a notepad, and a sharpie.

Get her to take notes in Chinese as she goes. She can reference them if she gets confused.

I taught my mom how to stream her TVB Dramas from the PS3. Pretty simple. I just download the shows, re-name the folders, and turn on PS3 Media Server. She does the rest.
It's taken a huge load off of my shoulders. Except she keeps asking if there's new episodes yet. Kinda annoying, but it distracts her for an hour.

Teach them the basics of security (CC, address, etc) before anything. You dont want this:

Then afterwards you could try setting up a stripped down Linux build for them with giant icons for internet, shutdown, note pad...etc.

LuHua 04-10-2012 08:44 PM

I've taught my parents and grandparents, parents learned on their own afterwards. It pretty much just came down to installing windows in chinese, and teaching them how to use pptv, and get on the chinese news sites. Email took a bit longer, but all in all it wasn't that hard. Depends on their personality and learning ability I suppose. Good luck.
