The University of B.C.’s Alma Mater Society has hopes to reduce walking a create a fun way for students to get between floors at the university’s new student union building (SUB) by building slides that allow students to slip from floor to floor.

Plans are currently underway to incorporate two $25,000 slides on the eastside of the new 250,000-square-foot SUB, which is currently under construction.

“We got a lot of feedback (from students saying) they wanted something to play off interactive learning and taking a break from their studies — study and play,” said Caroline Wong, AMS VP administration and chair of the SUB project committee. “It will be the first slide in a SUB in North America. We want to leave that kind of legacy for our students.”

In the current proposal, each slide would span the length of one floor — one would descend from the fourth to the third floor, and the other from the third to the second.

Construction of the SUB began earlier this year, however initial plans did not include slides.

The building is expected to be complete by 2014.

According to Joost Bakker, a principal architect with Dialog Architects responsible for designing the new SUB, building indoor slides is a feasible option but said more research needs to be completed.

While plans are still in the early stages, Wong said they are accessing all options to make the slides as safe as possible, noting there would be safety protocols and guidelines in place such as locking it up at night.

The addition of slides will not push the completion date back and is something that students could potentially add after the building is complete, Bakker added.

WTF this seems like an April Fool's joke.

:rukidding: :seriously:

Sure, why not, looks like fun. Where is the new SUB being built in relation to the old one?

Alphamale 04-18-2012 09:07 AM

What about when it rains and people shoes and shit are all wet and they go down the slide and you're next?

:fuckthatshit:

murd0c 04-18-2012 09:16 AM

You know someones going to dump some cooking oil down it as a joke

GLOW 04-18-2012 09:38 AM

i anticipate:
1) a fat guy is gonna get stuck ala homer simpson at the waterpark
or
2) girl goes down in skirt, with guy trying to climb up the tube...hilarity ensues

What the, I had no idea a new SUB was even being built.

mbrodie 04-18-2012 11:28 AM

One word: liability.

All it would take is one silly student riding the slide backwards, having their rich mommy & daddy sue the university, and bye bye slide ride LOL

CP.AR 04-18-2012 11:46 AM

So my "sub" fee is going towards a slide? :rukidding:

mbrodie 04-18-2012 12:00 PM

I feel sorry for you students. Been there, done that. You're being used as a commodity, and (if you don't pursue "learning" really hard) the education imparted is really thin.

The whole time I felt like I was plugged into that baby harvesting machine from The Matrix.

I think Warren Beatty put it best:
Education? education? there ain't no education going on up in that m*##**#*##*#

Almost every elementary school has slides.

Might be worth noting that at all the elementary schools in my area, the twisty slides and tube slides have been completely removed and replaced with straight and shallower slides.

You comparing elementary kids with university students. Same level of intelligence, but one weighs considerably more (easier to get injured)

StylinRed 04-18-2012 03:33 PM

a lot of corporate HQs and Universities do this or similar

its a way to ease tension/stress specially for exam time

drunkrussian 04-18-2012 04:56 PM

a lawsuit, a suicide AND a disability of an infant all for only $25k a pop!

Elementary kids are wiser. They don't have an on-campus pub with cheap drink specials located in the same building as proposed slide(s).

DasHooch 04-18-2012 05:09 PM

This seems like a waste of money... and I don't mean just the slide. What's wrong with the existing SUB? Not trendy enough?

Google also has slides in it's offices and free drinks.
