1996 Toyota 4 Runner...Air Care failed...ideas

Hey guys, so my cousin has a 1996 4Runner V6 limited and it failed air care when he took it in for a test (a year ago)...long story short...HC just failed by like .250...but the Nox was 3 times the pass amount.....

so my question is....where should i start first.....do the ERG valve? the Cat ? the Muffler?? 2 sensor?? i'm just trying to be cost efficient any thoughts on this would help as i want to help my cousin put the truck back on the road. The 4Runner starts up and runs great..just the emission's the right now...

Thanks

does this vehicle have an aftermarket cat? typically, factory cat converters don't fail on these vehicles...

the combination of high HC and NOx leads me to believe it as cat as well...

sell me the truck lol

ok so look at ur o2 sensors n see if there communicating with ur cat
ur pre cat o2 should read up and down between .2 -.7 and ur after cat o2 should be very steady at .5 -.7
if this turns out good then look at ur egr
ur egr doesnt fail often its usually plugged up in the pipe

also check ur bank one and bank 2 short term and long term fuel trim

if its a cat or o2 then ur nox should be off but the rest of the reading should be bang on

if ur cats done ur o2 might be done as well cuz if ur cat is done it will be sending raw fuel into the o2, the computer will then say too rich n try to lean it out but if the or is stuck on rich then ya u get the picture

Hey guys. Sorry to bump thread but I'm having the same problem with my 4x4. But Its only the NOx that is failing.

Air care Pass is 1.1

My 4x4 is 1.3

Anybody have any idea on what I can do to lower the emissions? It passes every else with flying colors.

i would bring it to a local dealer and see what they say first. if not satisfied, try another dealer for second opinion.

If you've waited over a year already.....why not wait until Aircare is finished?
