Man falls into metal shredding machine

Quote:

Worker killed in shredder accident at Victoria recycling plant

An employee at recycling company Steel Pacific in Victoria was killed Saturday afternoon after apparently falling into a shredder.

“It’s tragic, tragic,” said Victoria Police Sgt. Wade Murray as about a half a dozen shocked employees looked on from a distance at the recycling operation at 307 David St.

“We don’t know how or the circumstances around it but he’s trapped in the shredder. He has been pronounced deceased," Murray said.

The 35- to 40-year old man somehow fell into the shredder at about 3:50 p.m.

“Currently right now, the coroner, WorkSafe B.C., our ident-forensic section and our detective section are on scene collecting evidence,” Murray said. A Victoria police victim services worker was also on scene.

“It’s still very early stages [of the investigation] into this tragic accident,” he said.

Coroner Barb McLintock said she had heard “it could be a bit of a complex maneuver to make things go well” in extricating the man from the machine.

“We will be doing an investigation. WorkSafe is on site with us and WorkSafe will be doing an investigation because it was, obviously, an industrial plant,” McLintock said.

McLintock said it could be Sunday or even Monday before the man’s identity is released — depending on where his next of kin are located.

“It sounds like a horrible accident,” McLintock said.

Caroll Taiji, a spokeswoman for Steel Pacific, said: "The facts of the accident will come out with the police and WorkSafe's involvement and the company's co-operation. Our primary concern is reaching the family and making sure they get the news in the most sensitive manner."

A representative of Steel Pacific senior management was flying in from Vancouver, Murray said.

Ouch. They're going to have a hell of a time piecing this one together.

RIP to the deceased and the family/friends.

Someone's gonna pay for this one. There would have to be 101 safety systems in place to prevent a person from being able to get inside an operating machine. Maybe some safety systems bypassed or procedures/training ignored.

I'm imagining some worker kicking a stuck piece to get the machine going and then falling in.

Terrible way to go, RIP.

R.I.P. That's what nightmares are made of.

Same thing happened to a guy at the recycling place on Mitchell Island. I remember going in there and watching a guy throw aluminum into it and the loud racket it was making. It crossed my mind that a person falling in wouldn't get out in one piece and then later I found that someone had fallen in a few months earlier.
