BC to change Traffic Ticket appeals system

"The B.C. government denied concerns that it is trying to assert more control over traffic-ticket appeals, saying overthephone disputes would be handled by an independent tribunal.

The Justice Ministry's proposed changes to the Motor Vehicle Act, unveiled this week, would remove traffic-ticket disputes from the courts in favour of an administrative process."

This system doesn't sound fair at all.

If they change the system they have to change the DPP and DRP system as well.

Most people dispute tickets because huge ass fucking premiums for points

You mean, most people dispute tickets because they know that the current dispute process will take 12-18 months, therefore it will buy them time so they can avoid paying the huge ass fucking premiums.

I have never gone through any random bullshit either... when I was driving stock random cars.

On the other hand, I did get bullshit tickets since cops are attracted to modified cars.

Funny, because I've been driving modified cars for a number of years now. Real cars too not just lowered civics, ones that should theoretically attract attention. An RX7, Skyline a few Miatas and VW's. Not once have I been profiled and given a ticket because of what I drive. I still to this day believe fully that is has everything to do with how you drive and how you respond to a cop when they pull you over.

Im pretty sure your car isn't "loud" as in visually distracting...
god, I sometimes want to rip my eyes out when I drive to parts of the GVRD, seeing funky colour schemes, loud grapefruit shooters, and chrome wheels on a car with less than 100whp...

This.

Sorry OP, but I highly doubt your "random bullshit" excuse. I've also been driving modded cars forever and I've had two tickets in the last 20 years. One for doing 160km/h in Saskatchewan after a turbo install (officer only gave me a ticket for doing 120) and one for driving without a license (after moving here I forgot your DL expires on your Bday whereas back home it expires last day of the month of your Bday).

There are always people who seem to attract shit and then blame the officers when maybe they should look at their own attitudes and actions.

It really seems to be that way, doesn't it?
On the other hand, I'm seeing a lot less douchebaggery on the roads these days. Fewer racers and assholes, but FAR more geriatrics. They're the ones who really freak me out. The ones who don't even realize just how dangerous they are.

Preaching to the choir, I live on the island remember. A drive through Sidney is like playing russian roulette. When you see them at a stop sign, you better expect that they're (geriatrics) just going to go through it when they feel like it.

That's fine, I'm not here tryin to tell or prove anybody nothing, I'm just posting my experience, and yours will differ because you're not me and I'm not you. Since I got my car in 2007 I've had 1 speeding ticket to my name, and it was for doing 70 on hastings that big downhill stretch everyone goes 80-100, so all these other tickets came about when I started modding my car not knowing exactly what was ok and what wasn't and I take full responsibility for that. Shit with license plates mounted improperly, window tints, headlights, tail light tint, etc.... these things I've actually fixed COMPLETELY, been fully road legal for almost 2 years now with a recent VI pass to prove it.

And my attitude is fine, I'm smart enough to know the quicker I give the cop what he wants the faster I'm out of there, so it's all about yes sir no sir with me. But if you're really interested in that I got a story for ya, I admit I did get caught slipping few months ago (first time since my high school days) where I mouthed off a cop for running my plates as I was dropping my girlfriend off at work.
There was absolutely no reason for him to do any of this since I wasn't breaking any laws, so when I asked him why he did it his answer was "Because I can" and he topped it off with giving me a VI notice, AAAAND impounding my car for 7 days (I admit this was probably because I had just told him to go fuck himself minutes earlier, I probably would have impounded the car too if I was him)
So I don't know, if you wanna call losing your temper once in 10 years because a cop gave you a ticket for having a factory exhaust and you had to pay $100's of dollars to get it out of impound, then another $150 to pass VI for something you know to be completely legal, and on top of that lose the wages from missing work that day if you wanna call that "bad attitude and blaming the officer" then I'm the baddest cop hating guy on the block

for what exactly ?
If you're implying I'm a dangerous driver, well Imma take pretty good offense to your comment since I take pride in the way I drive, I do it with courtesy and manners, something most people on the road lack. Like I said above, these tickets have nothing to do with speeding, so if you wanna kick me off the road cuz I may have had tint or a missing license plate in the past, then half of RS members cars should be in the garage as well.

I'm so glad I moved away from B.C. This is clearly a move that encroaches upon a citizen's fundamental rights to a fair process when disputing a violation ticket.

They raise fines/penalties and increase enforcement of minor violations of traffic laws and act all surprised when the courts can't keep up with disputes.

Taking away one's fundamental right to due process is obviously in the interest of the government to make convictions and collections of revenue much more efficient. In a free and democratic society, that should not be the answer. Better choices are:

1) Selective enforcement - Reduce the number of tickets written to target only the most
egregious offendors.

2) Penalties that are commensurate with the offence - No more huge economic penalties + ICBC rape charges for minor traffic violations

Of course this would never happen since it would reduce revenue.

Why not penalties commensurate with the offenders? I like 1 and 2; and I love Sweden's system of percentage-of-income fines. How much more equal can you get than paying a percentage of what you make rather than a flat dollar rate?

First of all, it's Switzerland that has the % of income fines, not Sweden. Second, % of income fines are a dumb idea, because not everyone's income is reported and I don't see any causation link between income and breaking traffic laws.
