So I'm selling a phone on CL today, tips?

anything i should be concerned with? I'm a little concerned with dealing with strangers not from RS on high $ items

I mean aside from getting robbed and fake cash.

I'll be meeting at a Skytrain station. EDIT: I will make him get in my car as i don't want to exchange $ in public

a few precautions I took:

-installed a pattern pass code to lock the screen.
-installed Cerberus with a spare gmail account so if i get mugged at least i can track the phone and record audio and photos remotely. i can password lock and wipe it too if needed.

:concentrate:

make sure all your personal info/pics are removed. usually i meet at a starbucks or something so they can test the wifi and such. harder to get mugged in a starbucks. oh ya, make sure your battery is fully charged. last 2 phones i sold i forgot and they were both low/dead battery

take a buddy.
meet a coffee shop or somewhere with a lot of people

LC21 05-18-2012 09:43 AM

Bring a knife. Srs.

Excelsis 05-18-2012 09:58 AM

99% of people don't even know how to use knifes...

DO NOT meet at a Skytrain station.

It's an established hub for crime and especially muggings.

Go with a friend, be sure to ask for only 20s or the new 100s/50s. Try meeting at starbucks, mcdonalds, anywhere more public.

Don't do any transactions with people talking about paypal. My barber who is foreign just lost big bucks selling his phone to some scammer

Psykopathik 05-18-2012 10:20 AM

this will be a cash deal, i have already told the buyer.

thanks for the tips thus far.

lol dont meet inside your car.. if he pulls a knife, you cant get away...

if you have a dash cam, just turn it on, make sure you get him to look at it and get a good shot of his face.. if he runs away, at least you can report it to the police with his face.. and post it on ALLLL the local forums

tell him you need to hold on to his ID, like a drivers license or something so that he wont take off with the item..

you could meet up in the mall of something.. but if he takes off with it, you still dont have any info on him of pics...

always meet in public places, make cash deals only and google the email of the person and see if they have an fb acct etc. i always do this for everything i have sold on cl and have yet to have any kind of problem.

i recently sold my ip4 and i requested to meet at blenz and brought a frd incase beef goes down

dboy 05-18-2012 11:20 AM

Meet at starbucks/mcdonalds. Have a friend sit somewhere in the restaurant for watch.

Psykopathik 05-18-2012 11:45 AM

turns out buyer is a girl, i've changed the meeting place to a dark alley. :fullofwin:

J/K changed to Starbucks

iam_dan 05-18-2012 11:53 AM

if you're really anal, then make the transaction in front of your bank. there'd be a security guard, cameras, and you can deposit the cash immediately.
i usually just do it in public places with wifi so we can sit down and inspect/show the item being sold.

if you're thinking like that, i'd rather do it at a timmy's when the cops take their break.

there's bound to be cops on their break. especially the one off of lougheed & gilmore

J.C 05-18-2012 01:01 PM

usually i bring a friend, meet at a fast food restaurant, etc.
i've sold and bought 5/6 phones in the last year and nothing bad has ever happened.
a lot of the time you can easily judge what type of person they are just by their texts and emails

dont go alone, and INSIDE a starbucks seems alright.

twitchyzero 05-18-2012 01:27 PM

never meet a buyer in your car..because this may happen

honestly, i'd be more suspicious of you, if someone i was going to buy a phone off told me to get in their car.

CT10 05-18-2012 02:38 PM

I like to meet at starbucks, or at a bank since there's always security cameras there. Sure if you still get mugged there, I doubt the bank would turn over the security film, but it's probably a good deterrent anyways.

Pics or it didn't happen.

BossFrancis 05-18-2012 03:09 PM

Personally, I hate selling stuff. Some people are just so anal. They inspect and inspect and inspect for like 20 minutes. Yeah I know you don't want to be scammed or anything but if you know it's used don't expect that good of a condition. What I try to do is take as many pictures and send it to them so they can expect what it looks like.
