| computer for your mom
I am hoping one you wise ppl can help me out with making a decision on a new computer.
I currently have a HP G60 laptop with 199 GB free of 258 GB. I don't store much cause I use it for work and school. I have an external hard drive I store most of my music on as I am so old school, I put 6 cd's in my stereo while at home.
The battery has died on the laptop which is ok because 95% of the time it sits on my desk at home. It wanders to school once or twice a term and to the office once or twice a year.
Portability is no longer an issue so I want replace it with a desktop.
I have two 23" monitors at the office and once you have had two it is hard to go back to on 17". So the plan is slim or regular desktop with dual monitors.
I am not a NCIX type customer, I would love to but I don't understand enough to deal with so I am looking at something from Best Buy (won't deal with FS but yah I know they are the same company) unless you can suggest another retail store.
What do I will I be using it for?
-massive crazy spreadsheets - microsoft office
-research - quick internet speed
-email, skype classmates, download the odd song if I don't want to buy the entire CD
-I found out on Friday, how to watch tv on my computer, dangerous for someone who works 40 - 50 hours a week and takes 2 - 3 courses a term. (I don't have cable to my 40" waste of money tv.
So basically something one of you young whipper-snappers would get for you mom.
suggestions?

if you dont game on it, choose low end budget video and use that money and buy an i7 with lots of ram...
whats your budget?

his build came to under $900 when price matched.. looks like a good build for your needs... you could swap out some stuff like going cheaper on a video and spend the money on getting a better cpu/motherboard...

I have no budget....meaning I have no idea what I should be paying. guess under $1000
NCIX is not a good choice for me, as I don't have the skills to install stuff myself.
(Actually I am banned from owing a screwdriver cause I would try to swap computer parts)

Honestly, you don't need much. And for peace of mind and easy to use, I'd suggest a Mac Mini or iMac even though they have horrible C/P ratio. (not so much on entry level Mac Mini... as to build a similar unit would cost about the same if not more)
I built several windows PCs for my parents, but they always have problems with it (from both software/hardware)
Then I simply got tired of it. I bought them an entry level Mac Mini on CL for around $500 in 2010, boosted the ram to 4GB... never had to service their computer when I visit them. Earlier this year their HDD crapped out and I replaced with a spare 60GB SSD I had, that's the only thing I ever did.
And if you go the Mac Mini route, you have the option to easily move around.

this looks ok... i dont know the brand tho... that will give you all the power you need to do anything from gaming to video editing!!

Look into a all in one. Saves space and all you need is one cable for power. I got a all in one for my sister. This one has a 21.5 inch screen and HDMI out for a second monitor.
