Quote:

Diane Tran, a 17-year-old honor student in Texas, was forced to spend the night in jail last week after missing too many classes, KHOU-11's Sherry Williams reports.

The Willis High School junior, who helps support two siblings, has both a full time and part-time job. She said that she's often too tired to go to school.

urrh 05-29-2012 12:09 PM

so in texas, skipping school is a criminal offense? :seriously:

fliptuner 05-29-2012 12:18 PM

My money's on public support (maybe a good paying job offer) and the judge overturning his ruling.

The day in jail is nothing. It's the record that goes with it, that's gonna fuck her over.

pastarocket 05-29-2012 12:18 PM

Damn, the judge is being harsh is sentencing her to jail. No compassion. Diane clearly needs financial help and yet the judge sentences her to pay the $100 fine in addition to jail time?

I know that Texas has the death penalty for much more serious criminal offenses, but seriously, Diane's offence doesn't even come close to being a serious crime.

i-VTEC 05-29-2012 12:19 PM

Her siblings not even in Texas and if in Texas, skipping school is a offense then she should move out of the state to another one.

spyker 05-29-2012 12:20 PM

The parents are the ones who should be going to jail, not her.

CP.AR 05-29-2012 12:22 PM

Fappin 05-29-2012 02:29 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't her record be gone once she turns legal?

CP.AR 05-29-2012 02:31 PM

If it's anything like Canada

Criminal record is wiped
Your personal record is still scarred (if your employer digs that deep that is)

dinosaur 05-29-2012 02:34 PM

i love how the judge didn't appear to know her story or reasons for missing some days at school! what a fucking idiot...its all about shoot first, ask questions later.

and she isn't one of "them" or "those students"....she clearly has her shit together and isn't skipping to smoke behind the school or appear on 16 & Pregnant.

his aloof attitude to her spending the night in jail is aggravating. will this have a effect on her college application? future career? does she have a record now?

fucking pathetic.

parm104 05-29-2012 03:10 PM

What a load of crap. What should be asked is if she is missing all these classes and still managing to be on the honor roll, what's going on with the kids that aren't missing school and aren't getting good grades? Poor teaching? Poor discipline at home? Lack of motivation? What's the point in going to school if you're not getting good grades...After all, that's the end all means of going to school...to get good grades...

Great68 05-29-2012 04:07 PM

They sure have their priorities straight in Texas!

pinn3r 05-29-2012 04:16 PM

what the fuck, America? :seriously:

Psykopathik 05-29-2012 04:52 PM

Scumbag judge.

punishes girl for missing school and working hard for money, by taking money away and making her miss more school.

Bahhbeehhaaaa 05-29-2012 04:56 PM

mmmm... i smell a lawsuit on it's way....

BaoTurbo 05-29-2012 06:15 PM

Technically you pay for school and you can get jailed for missing school? What the..?

shenmecar 05-29-2012 06:24 PM

Its already a miracle she is still IN school considering her circumstances. Stay strong!
