OSX scales well, Windows does not, this is not new information. | You should read this: Developing For Retina Displays
Posted up yesterday for developers. It's an introduction to designing your application for a high resolution (Retina) display including the reasons you need to update your app (for example, no longer using the deprecated API's and instead using the new API's Apple has introduced to deal with issues that arise using high PPI displays).
So I loaded up the latest version of Xcode last night and tried the new API's out in a demo program. Lo and behold they didn't do anything. Apple took the old API's and simply renamed them and called them "Retina" API's thinking that developers would be fooled by their slick marketing. Now if you'll excuse me I have to hit the developer forums and warn all the other devs about this massive hoax Apple is trying to pull and save them all from wasting time re-writing applications that don't need to be updated at all.
And you're calling other people "morons". |

There is nothing in there that is new information that needs to be covered here, and nothing that contradicts what has been said. We already know things like icon assets need to be updated. We already know there are new APIs that allow developers to double the res on their assets. This is all known, and has nothing to do with having to switch to Apple software because "it's retina".
I am trying to help people out here, trying to help explain things that are often misconstrued due to marketing. You are just trying to be 'smart' by taking what I have said, twisting it around into something offensive, and basically being a smart ass.

Icons/Button images will scale on a high PPI display, but they won't look as good. Any app could be updated to use higher res icons, but it's far from necessary.
Of course, IF they add new features as well, then maybe it's worth it.. but it's misleading to say that someone 'needs' to upgrade to a retina display app. Then again, mac users like things to be all pretty, so maybe it is 'necessary'.

You are just trying to be 'smart' by taking what I have said, twisting it around into something offensive, and basically being a smart ass. | Don't lie. You didn't read a damn thing in the link I provided except for maybe skimming over the introduction page. Your comment about "API's to double the res on assets" (for example) clearly proves this. What exactly does that mean, anyway?
Apple has done a very good job of allowing software that hasn't been updated for Retina displays to work on the new Macbook. However, it's not without problems and how good your software runs without issues will depend largely on how well the developer has adhered to accepted practices.
And why do people have to switch to Apple software "because it's Retina"? Current software will run fine. When the updates get released to take advantage of the new screen then it will work better. The simple fact Apple put so much effort into making sure existing Apps run fine during the transition to getting updated goes completely against your idea that Apple is trying to get people to buy their "Retina" software over other companies versions.
Flinging insults? Really? Oh the irony.
Face it, you're wrong and are simply too pig-headed to admit it.

Face it, you're wrong and are simply too pig-headed to admit it. | Wrong about what exactly? That UI elements scale? That graphic elements do not?
People don't have to switch to apple software, that is the whole point I was making. Do you not read? For some fucked up reason you are saying is "wrong" and posting links to sites that have nothing to do with what we were talking about.
Current software will run fine. That is exactly what I said. When the updates come, they will work better - again that's what I said. We all know this. It's all there in the posts.
Somehow, you agree with everything I say, yet for since I suggested that someone doesn't need to buy apple software, and that they are becoming ignorant due to marketing, you come in here to defend the honor of a company.
I have no idea why you would live your life doing this for the richest company in the world who doesn't give two fucks about you, but there you go... You are spending your time agreeing with people, yet going out of your way to try to defame them.
I have seen you do this again and again, but this is your worst example yet. You are literally repeating all the things I have said, then at the end say that I am wrong and pig-headed.
Mind. Full. Of. Fuck.

All this bullshit about how Android is fragmented, and their only 7% of their devices are running ICS, but at least all the current devices have turn-by-turn. Apple uses the excuse saying you need a dual-core processor to process turn-by-turn. Bullshit. I know tons of shitty android phones that can make it work. Apple just wants you to upgrade. And when iPhone 5 comes out, they want you to upgrade once again.

I have a turn by turn app called Navigon that works beautifully on the iPhone 4, so of course it's BS. Still, shouldn't be complaining. The phone does exactly what it was paid for 2 years ago. Any added or extra features shouldn't necessarily be free especially since they'd want to save it for their flagship phone.
They're a company that's out to make money, not a charity giving free stuff away. I suppose this is what 3GS users felt when iPhone4 users got HDR photos, facetime, etc etc. However, I'm a little at why iPad1 isn't supported for iOS6.

This was a legit excuse.
I don't see the benefit of saving the turn by turn navigation for 4s and later phones as many ppl are already using apps like Tomtom or navigon for that.

The benefit for Apple is people upgrading to the iPhone5. Planned obsolescence. Personally, if I was running apple I would discontinue 3GS instead of supporting it with iOS6 and give turn by turn to the iPhone4. Asking for Siri is a bit much since that was a native 4S function to begin with.
If they are rescrapping the maps program then Turn by Turn should be given. I understand the lack of Flyover, iPhone4 couldn't handle that shit probably.

As of Q1 2012, Android is at 61% and iOS is at 29%. This is in USA only, Android is actually much higher in most other countries. Sauce |

Android has the higher numbers in device market share, iOS has the higher numbers in developer interest.
People can bitch about turn-by-turn not coming to the iPhone 4, but here's another way to look at it: Do you think the developers of Navigon, TomTom or other nav Apps are complaining? I bet they're happy since they can still sell their Apps and they weren't all put out of business overnight.
And with Apple purchasing data from TomTom (and also apparently MS, among others) then they could also be doing this to appease TomTom as part of their deal. Nobody really knows all the reasons, so everyone picks the easy one that Apple is doing it strictly to force people to upgrade. If that were the case, why even offer iOS 6 on the 3GS then? Just drop support for it altogether and leave it on the latest version of iOS 5.
Clearly it's not so cut & dry as some decisions Apple makes appear to be wanting people to upgrade while others aren't.
