mod for better gas mileage

any mod that can improve gas mileage for 00 civic sohc with short ram intake?
would anyone recommend D16 MSD SS COIL DISTRIBUTOR EXTREME CAP KIT or other msd products?
or would any aftermarket distributor wires, caps and rotor do the job?

Phil@rise 06-11-2012 06:05 PM

How bout a good tuneup including a new fuel filter and O2 sensor.
had a client in here couple weeks ago complaining his 00' civic was only getting 400km/tank. CEL light wasnt on but thats pretty bad so we tossed a new O2 and he jumped up to 600km/tank.

tipy 06-11-2012 06:45 PM

got new o2 and fuel filter was changed 20k km ago
also using synthetic engine oil
i can get 600km/tank with full full fill up

Headers, seafoam, msd equipment, underdrive pullies, new trans fluid, wires, plugs, cats, and check your brakes and wheel bearings.

buy a vw diesel lol 900km/tank.
Free mod. Increase the air pressure in your tires. Lighter wheels will also help.

Use diagnostic tools (ScanGauge II) to learn how to drive more efficiently. This is probably the single biggest change you can make.

SumAznGuy 06-12-2012 10:01 AM

Change your tires and run some harder compound skinny tires to reduce the friction with the road. Also get some slightly taller tires to go with the light weight wheels to reduce rotational mass.

Gut the car. Take out the stock seats and get some super light weight Kirkey aluminum "seats".

Get an AFC or custom tune ecu and lean the motor out.

Get the brakes checked out and properly adjusted so they don't contact the rotor.

i just think of this....

that's awesome
OP, like Phil said, good tuneup is the best option will impact your issue the most, don't get suckered into those eBay ExTrEmE GaS MiLeAgE mods aka BULLSHIT ....
I used to get 450 on a tank, now I'm getting just over 300...... gonna be needing a good tuneup myself soon and will be hitting up Rise

Lomac 06-12-2012 01:38 PM

Pretty much already all covered here. But to sum up, a good tune up is probably the best thing you can do to get better fuel mileage. Making sure your tires are properly inflated to reduce rolling resistance is a good suggestion as well. After that, you're basically nickle and diming your way into more mpg.

I'm not sure how much hinderance your short air ram is doing, as it's basically just sucking up the hot air inside the engine bay.

tiger_handheld 06-12-2012 01:43 PM

what does a good tuneup consist of for import cars..

Phil@rise 06-12-2012 02:20 PM

Fuel filter, park plugs and wires (if applicable), timing check and adjustment (if applicable), oil and filter change, O2 sensor(s). Depending on the vehicle there are a few other sensor checks as well.

bcrdukes 06-12-2012 04:49 PM

Phil,

If a car has its original O2 sensors but no CEL or codes, would you recommend changing them? Or leave them as-is until it becomes a problem?

Holeshot 06-12-2012 04:56 PM

driving slower also increases gas mileage.

TjAlmeida 06-12-2012 05:12 PM

best mod=public transit.

Holy bussing to school everyday saves me 22kms everyday.

if u can't do this then tune up is the best way to get ur money out of ur gas..although tune up can be pricey too but on a civic u can probably do most if not all of it urself as long as u have some sort of mechanical experience..and also stated above best thing is to get a different car that same price as the civic (assuming its a newer civic) with an even smaller engine or a diesel (however some diesels do just as much fuel economy as some gas engines so just do ur research if ur going that route), also check out hyper-milling websites or whatever they're called..i hear those guys care about like 0.1 mpg increases etc crazy bastards

btw not entirely true...driving at the engines optimal speed/ rpm efficiency is what increases ur gas mileage...u gotta think just cause u drive slower if u never get anywhere on time whats the point...(see top gear special with the jag / polo and subaru with one tank drive video)

brick under the gas pedal..... bricks cost about 2.50 for a very nice red one. 10 cents for zap straps.

A sensor can become slow. Slow enough to affect fuel mileage drastically but not always slow enough to trigger a CEL.
I recommend changing them at 80-100000 km intervals regardless if CEL light is on.

Damn. I'm at 241,xxx KMs on the original O2 sensors. :fullofwin:

Something that can have a larger impact on the mid to late 90s Hondas is the PCV valve. If it’s sticking, it has a very noticeable negative effect on mileage. If you have never changed it, change it out. It’s cheap and can make a difference.

tee-tea 06-13-2012 11:31 PM

try adding in some gas additives, to clean up the carbon built up in your valves

westopher 06-14-2012 09:53 PM

Lower your car. Less wind resistance.

xerograv 06-15-2012 04:48 PM

turning off the AC and Heat in the car also helps. or at least it seems to.

Phil@rise 06-15-2012 06:14 PM

Turning off the AC will help. Some cars the AC runs almost non stop even with the heat on to dehumidify the interior tho so it may not be possible not without actually unpluging the ac compressor clutch wires.
