parallel parking job gone wrong kills woman in vancouver

Botched parking attempt kills pedestrian in Kitsilano

WTF!
how do some people get their licences?

A parking job gone wrong has left a woman dead and others shaken in the popular Vancouver neighbourhood of Kitsilano.

A driver, 67, was parallel parking his vehicle Monday on the north side of 2800-block West Broadway, just west of Macdonald Street when, for an unknown reason, the car accelerated and hit a 52-year-old woman walking westbound on the sidewalk.

The woman became pinned between the car’s trunk and the storefront of The Shoe Studio. She was taken to hospital but died soon after.

Later in the day, a visibly shaken woman who exited and locked up The Shoe Studio declined to comment and referred all questions to the police. The store’s windows were intact while dents were left along the store’s facade.

Yagger’s Sports Bar sits directly across the street from the shoe store and patrons were enjoying lunch on the patio when the accident occurred just before 12:30 p.m.

“I didn’t see it — I heard it. It was a large banging noise and then a scream,” said owner Tom Poirier of Monday’s accident.

“When I came out, I saw the station wagon almost perpendicular to the storefront.”

Nicole Belanger was behind the counter of Solly’s Bagels, located one door over from The Shoe Studio, when people ran into the shop, calling for help.

“I was in panic mode,” the employee said. “I just saw her on the ground getting CPR and the car pulled out into the street.”

According to Poirier and Belanger, pedestrians are often at the mercy of drivers along the busy corridor and major transit route. While the intersection of Macdonald and West Broadway has pedestrian-controlled signals, another crosswalk to the west of The Shoe Studio is uncontrolled.

Just a week earlier, a fire broke out on the second storey of two businesses only steps down the street from The Shoe Studio. A pizza shop and a salon have been closed since the June 5 blaze.

“That side of the block is not having a good week,” Poirier noted.

Collision investigators, who don’t believe speed or alcohol are factors in Monday’s accident, are now asking witnesses to contact 604-717-3012. The driver has been co-operating with police and the car will undergo mechanical testing.

Monday’s accident is the city’s eighth traffic-related fatality of the year, compared to seven in 2011 and just four in 2010.

they really should have driver test for people older then 65. i know this driver is only 67 but there are alot of old drivers out there that are driving dangerously.

Is that where the Plenty store is? I always thought that area is a pedestrian accident just waiting to happen, but more because of the multiple crosswalks within a 2 block distance.

RIP to the woman at the wrong place at the wrong time.

but older people are more likely to have slower reaction time which could be dangerous on the road, if they have the N system for inexperience drivers, they should have something for older people too.

This is the age where dementia sets in and sometimes they can forget which is brake and which is gas.

Old people really need to be tested every year. Remember the old lady in Victoria that gunned her vehicle into the group of taxi drivers?

Exactly. You got to be very aware when you drive through there. There should be pedestrian lights or something.

Lots of people suck, both old and young. If you're proposing to test older people but refusing a test yourself...you do realize that makes you look like a driver who wouldn't pass re-testing, yes?

fuckin old drivers. They should restrict driving based on age. After 50 years old, you have to take a driving test every 6 months to prove that you're not a moron.

actually, im almost 40 kids.

and yes.. 50 IS old... And it is when people start to react slower. Why wait until 65 when it might be way too late and more people die. What if it was your mom walking there?
ANd what happens to this shithead driver? nothing... sure it was an accident, but fuck how many more people have to get run over by these assholes.

To all the people who don't agree on people being re-examined every so often. Is 20 mins in your pitiful life really more important than the lives of thousands of others on the road that you could potentially harm or even kill? Fucking self centered bastards.
