A young humpback whale found entangled in fishing net has died after grounding itself on White Rock beach south of Vancouver.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans marine mammal co-ordinator Paul Cottrell said the severely emaciated young whale was first spotted as water receded from the sandy, tidal flats early Tuesday morning.

Cottrell said the eight- to 10-metre-long juvenile died just hours after beaching itself.

“It had been struggling for a long time and likely hadn’t been eating for a long time,” he said.

What would be the "proper" way of getting rid of a beached whale.

TNT must have sounded like a great idea back in the day :P

SoulCrusher 06-12-2012 12:16 PM

feed it to the homeless.

I'm guessing tow it back into the sea, let nature deal with it as if the whale died of natural causes

jepho 06-12-2012 02:19 PM

i heard they were hauling it off and putting it in a marsh somewhere to naturally decompose.

the fox radio station was trying to sell poor wally the whale. Not sure if they got a bidder or not. I drove by it this morning but there was a crowd blocking my view. I've never had whale meat but it must be edible. Give it to a homeless shelter and make whale stir fry or something. So much wasted meat. Poor wally. His parents must be worried sick.

End up floating back on shore.

They start decomposing and expanding, eventually they explode themselves or we cut a hole and let it evacuate the gases naturally.

A leisurely 5 minute drive from home down to the beach this morning. Beached whale takes priority over going to class :troll:

fixed.

Some of us have a fascination for whales and other large animals, whether the animal is dead or alive.

eg.

Pretty sure that would violate international whaling treaties, but then again, they could take two measurements, call it research, then cut it up and sell it, circumventing the treaties Japanese style.

Poor guy, suffering for so long...

StylinRed 06-12-2012 09:36 PM

should totally cut it up and eat it/sell it/donate it

FOB Mainlander 06-12-2012 09:48 PM

Send it to Japan so they can kill one less whale

TRDood 06-12-2012 09:50 PM

i'm glad people had the decency to put flowers on the whale

not for any ceremonious reason, but just to teach the kids there to respect nature
