When he's healthy, he's one of the best players in the league. It's rare to have a player who's won the Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, Rocket Richard trophy, Stanley Cup, and an Olympic gold medal before his 25th birthday.

The Penguins are taking a financial risk on this contract extension on Sid for sure. They think it's worth it given the stature of the player and the doctor's diagnosis.

Bernier to Edmonton would make sense but not sure what oilers would offer

When healthy, he's universally regarded by other players as the best hockey player in the world. They got him at a relative bargain, he certainly could've asked for more..but both parties understand that those 12 years might be shortened due to injury. But if they aren't, the Pens will get a decade of Crosby dominance, so they decided it was worth the gamble.

Ronin 06-28-2012 02:14 PM

What DON'T the Oilers have to offer? I highly doubt they would trade any of the Nuge, Hall, Eberle or Yakupov but any of the four would fetch Bernier, a prospect and a 1st round pick.

411ken 06-28-2012 02:33 PM

Bernier to NJ or Toronto are my top 2 guesses Where he'd end up

you know that HE rejected Anaheim right? He's a D-Man so I highly doubt he was a top scorer in college nor is he projected to be a top scorer. He's an offensively gifted defenseman not a scoring phenom.

murd0c 06-28-2012 02:44 PM

The big thing is we just have to give him money and not another player or pick. Thats the big advantage on taking a risk cause if he doesnt pan out it's only money.

411ken 06-28-2012 02:49 PM

And who the Fuk would complain about gettin a top prospect for "free" or without finishing last in standings. If he doesn't light it up this year then he's got time to improve as Hes still young. Scouts know more about this guy so.they must see somethin great.

Canucks fans are so Damn hard to please lol

anaheim didnt pass on him... they couldnt get a deal done in the 30 days they had. shultz didnt want to stay with anaheim, that's why he de-registered from college, so he could become a UFA.

every team wants him because he's a FREEBIE. you dont have to give up anything to sign the guy. on top of that, he's going to be on an 2 year contract of only 925k caphit, something he can't negotiate. you have absolutely NOTHING to lose in signing this highly touted "prospect".

so what, if he doesnt work out? that's only 925k capspace, AND you can bury him in the minors. would you rather overpay for another Dman in the market? (ie. wideman at 5.25mil, gill at 4mil)

another fabian brunnstrom??? ahha

he was overhyped too

Ronin 06-28-2012 03:06 PM

The worst that can happen with Schultz is you're disappointed and you send him to the minors. But what if he's a top-4 ready, young defenseman that has huge offensive potential and a solid all around physical game? Canucks have nothing to lose by getting Schultz and everything to gain.

Gh0stRider 06-28-2012 03:08 PM

Money wasn’t an issue because all Schultz is eligible for is a two-year deal, at the entry-level maximum, which includes a $925,000 base salary, a $92,500 signing bonus and $2.85 million in performance bonuses for a cap hit $3.775 million.

brah, we seriously gonna do this?

Brunnstrom was a crap shoot who had a break out year as a 23 year old in the SEL. Schultz has constantly gotten better every year, since his days in Junior A.

Comparing Schultz to Brunnstrom and Gilroy is irrelephant, IMO.

Gh0stRider 06-28-2012 03:19 PM

im not comparing the 2 players, it just the media is all over this.

FLA should just bite and give us Bjugstad for Lu. Both teams win in this deal.

Hondaracer 06-28-2012 04:28 PM

Saying Shultz is gonna be a bust is like saying the nucks wont win the cup next year

How about try and make educated prediction..

punkwax 06-28-2012 04:38 PM

:concentrate:

I predict Hondaracer will continue to make sarcastic troll posts in Canucks ' threads and get failed by people who just don't get it.
