They've declined since their championship days. Their last great pick was perhaps Kronwall. It does not have to be a complete overhaul, just one good blue chipper would help. Detroit has decent prospects, but it's not enough to sustain them because a lot of them (Ouellet, Sproul and Marchenko) are still 5 year projects with only 2nd line upside. They have a plethora of B prospects rather than sure bets. Their only real prospect is nyquist, but detroit has trouble in their blueline. Smith is only decent, and even then it took him 5 years to play 2/3rd line minutes on the blue line. Their drafting is pretty good given how they've given up a lot of first rounders, but they really cannot expect the same amount of success they had from 1998-2003. |
