Yet another sign that MS is doing it wrong... with all the demand it created by the hype, it fails to capitalize on it. Think about Zune, when it was officially announced, it wasn't until 3~4 months before the first model became available.
I think every company should be like this, announce a product, pre-order available right away with a shipment no more than a few weeks away.
By the time this tablet actually launches, iPad 2013/Android Jelly Bean might be around the corner and through all the cough *controlled* cough leak from Google/Apple will make people wait for their new ipad/tablets...

its not other companies don't want to sell it immediately, its the company structure and they don't have a Tim Cook to manage their supply chain

Why rush then? It's not like they are missing anything by announcing it now and 3 month later (or whenever they can get their shit ready). I don't think any iPad customer would stop buying (probably some, but it should account a very small % of total iPad customer base)
And BTW... it wouldn't be MS without pulling a MS classic... OS CRASH!
Now there are rumblings from PC vendors who are not happy they have to compete against MS. For the most part, MS has stayed out of the PC business and was content to let others make the hardware while they provide the OS. Now they are competing directly with those same vendors by selling hardware.
I wonder how much MS "tacks on" for a Win 8 license to the price of their own tablets, or if they will eat the cost to help gain traction in the market. Meanwhile vendors will be paying for a license on every tablet they sell.

I'm pretty sure it won't be their intention to compete with their own vendors, and it will be something like the Nexus, where they put it out there and go "this is how you do it right" while charging a bit more for the product since they don't have to compete.
Either that, or there is very little interest in the OS, and they are completely on their own...
There is not a way in hell I would want to type on those slim, non tactile feedback keyboard-wannabe BS, let alone buying one.
And MS is getting it wrong AGAIN. Seems that they haven't learned anything from their failure in Zune.
The hardware doesn't matter as long as it's competitively matched with others. It's the software/hardware integration and ease-of-use that matters. As much as I hate the arrogance of Apple today, iPad is still unmatched in term of convenience and easy to use.
The Pro model's keyboard has actual travel (albeit only 1.5mm) when the key is depressed. I'd say that counts as tactile.
Also, HOW are they getting it wrong again? Can you elaborate?

Ok, so i bought a ipad 2 about 3 months ago, it was way overpriced for what it was. The novelty wore off afer about 3 days, and the. Inrealized that all it is , is a big touch, quite useless in 90% of my needs besides browsing. This new Surface tablet is precisely what i need and what the future needs. Everyone in north America has been brainwashed with this "Apple" is best theory but in fact its gardbage. I also own an iphone 4 and 4s, unfortunately i figured out too late that a nexus s could eat them both alive for the same price.
Anyway... The surface will do quite well, it is MILES and miles ahead of the ipad.

I live very far away from my parents, and every time I visit them, I spend easily 30% of the time setting up computers for them and teach them how to use them. I remember how my dad took down notes just so he could use Skype to video-con with me.
Last year, I got him an iPad2. They learned how to use Facetime to call me in under a minute. Downloaded a few apps that dedicate to watch those Taiwanese news they wanted and boom... magic happened. They no longer spend hours and hours trying to learn a new function.
From the MS presentation liveblog, I saw no mention of any dedication of user-friendliness and any software integrated to make the most out of the hardware. It's just another device MS designed so it could sell more Win8 licenses.
You're right , the ipad is great , but for what? Playing fart apps ? Browsing the web with no flash? I happen to own a ipad 2, and as soon as theses MS tablest come out, im selling it. Have you ever used the Zune software? It is amazing, i still use it even though i dint have a Zune anymore. When i bought my Zune, it had wifi sync, a touch pas and a 3.2 inch screen, there was no apple touch at the time, only the old busted Classic wih black and white screen. Microsoft has excellent technology, which is why they are nr1 globally and apple is but a snowflake on a mountain.
I appreciated apple up until they started their advertisment campaign based SOLELY on bad mouthing their competitors to make hemselves look good and stealing inovations from Cydia and Android and claiming novelty for themselves. The surface is a 100% USABLE computer, as opposed to my 700$ oversized ipad WHICH is now not included for updates by ios 6,but my 4s which has weaker specs is.
i hope apple dies in a fiery death, they certainly deserve it, rant out

^^ I am exactlyt he opposite. I haven't done much with my PC ever since I got my new iPad (Maily PC is on for P2P and that's about it).
I mainly surf on my ipad and it does just fine. What tons of free apps I get all that I need (News feeds, movies sush as Netflix, pps and much much more, games).
Also witht he iPad I can use it 8+hours and sitll have battery left for next day. With the surface there are no data on pricing, batery life, screem res, cpu..... too many mystery. It will be funny if the battery only last a few hours coz the OS is eating all yoru battery or it is laggy...........
Sometimes i forget where my iPad is since I never use it. Surface looks like a much better tool since it can actually be used for productivity when needed, in addition to everything else.

When they wrap the keyboard around a single piece of sheet on top, you can almost guarantee it's not going to be the same as keyboard. I am going to bet a cup of joe that it's most likely going to feel like those foldable/waterproof crappy keyboard you can buy for $10.
As for the "again" part, see my original post. MS announced nothing about any extra miles they went to make Win8 more suited for the hardware they are based on.
Look at iPad, iPhone or even Nexus phones... they all have dedicated pieces of hardware to go along with their softwares to stand out. iOS has functions like iMessage, Facetime, and all sort of first/third party apps that are redesigned from ground up to take advantage/limitation of the hardware. Nexus Galaxy has NFC that's compatible with Google Wallet... something like these show vision on user experience... while Surface has none... it's just another PC with very little room for expansion.
MS simply expect to put it out there and hope that other can come up with something nice about it, while not even trying to push anything on their own.

You have said it yourself, Surface is a COMPUTER. iPad was never designed to be one. It's just a device to facilitate those frequent activities that we do for perhaps 80% of our free time with computer (facebook, web browsing, chatting... etc) while you still use your computer for anything serious.

IMO, MS isn't exactly satisfied on what third party vendors are doing in the tablet arena and fears that they would lose their bread and butter to iOS and Android as PC is in decline while mobile devices are on the rise.
Lil birds told me that MS asks for $79 for a Win8 license to third party vendors. I think vendors have ground to be royally pissed because when MS announces Surface pricing, it better calculate with the same figure as it asks third parties to pay. Else, the other would simply move to something else as they can't compete with MS.
But I don't think MS would be this stupid again... unless they want the whole netbook fiasco again (remember how they were mostly based on Linux at the beginning because MS licensing simply didn't make sense for a device that cheap? MS gave in at the end and offered another license tier for netbooks)

rush? microsoft is close to 2 years behind already. i'm pretty sure microsoft does not have the logistic knowledge like apple to have things start shipping once they announce it.
plus, they probably recovered a lot of money from their stock prices by announcing it.
It does look interesting for sure, but I'm not convinced a tablet type platform is good for content creation. I have an iPad2 and love it, but I only use it for content consumption, like when I'm on the can or reading in bed.
