Ha so they took the Surface name and used it for their own tablet... If you don't remember, Surface was basically a giant tablet, the size of a table. Before tablets were a thing, and everyone assumed people didn't want them.

A tablet running a full x86 OS. Now that is interesting to me. (although in a way it's more like a laptop... this is like a hybrid laptop/tablet leaning more towards tablet)
There is not a way in hell I would want to type on those slim, non tactile feedback keyboard-wannabe BS, let alone buying one.
And MS is getting it wrong AGAIN. Seems that they haven't learned anything from their failure in Zune.
The hardware doesn't matter as long as it's competitively matched with others. It's the software/hardware integration and ease-of-use that matters. As much as I hate the arrogance of Apple today, iPad is still unmatched in term of convenience and easy to use.
I live very far away from my parents, and every time I visit them, I spend easily 30% of the time setting up computers for them and teach them how to use them. I remember how my dad took down notes just so he could use Skype to video-con with me.
Last year, I got him an iPad2. They learned how to use Facetime to call me in under a minute. Downloaded a few apps that dedicate to watch those Taiwanese news they wanted and boom... magic happened. They no longer spend hours and hours trying to learn a new function.
From the MS presentation liveblog, I saw no mention of any dedication of user-friendliness and any software integrated to make the most out of the hardware. It's just another device MS designed so it could sell more Win8 licenses.

what the hell is metro? I need a disc link or video or something
It's the name of their interface. Started with Zune, moved to Windows Phone 7, then incorporated into Windows 8 itself. Great touch interface, shitty desktop interface. Which is why a lot of desktop users are upset that they are being 'forced' to use a touch interface on their desktops, if they want to stay up to date (win8 will have a lot of important updates behind the scenes)
Look it up on youtube, or better yet check out a Windows 7 phone in person
I am not sure which version of Metro you refer to but the Metro on Win8 public beta (consumer preview) is utter garbage. It's so bad that the first search on the internet after I installed Win8 was "how to disable metro in win8" rather than the usual "firefox download". I thought I couldn't find anything less tolerable than crappy IE, but I was wrong.
Let me rephrase what I posted before, MS isn't interested in introducing an iPad competitor. They are seeing the decline in PC industry (dominated by WINTEL combo) and want to keep their relevance before people shift away for iOS or Android devices. This mentality, is why Windows Mobile couldn't keep up with Android (no. 1) and iOS (no. 2)
If MS is really serious about this market, they should stop bringing this one-OS fits all crap. They should dedicate themselves and make an OS that's truly focused on portable devices rather than introducing Metro (which is more or less a skin for Win7 so that touch devices can use it a bit better)
When I saw these tablets will have Win8 in them, the only thing that crossed my mind is, oh great, another device to buff MS Windows license number sold.
Well im running dual screens so it benefits me more than anything because i can just be browsing on my screen and i can still have metro up on the other.

You are pretty much the precise opposite of correct. I'll post why later

Not sure how this will help Windows sale.
At work we are still using WinXP. Is fast, decent and runs great on older computers (we are talking about Core2Dou here with 2Gb or RAM). Does the job just fine around the office.
The only reason I am using Win7 is because some games and software I use needs to have a more update Windows OS. If I could stick to WinXP I will for sure.
Not sure how well this will do. I been a PC person all my life but ever since I got my Iphone I been leaning towards Apple products more and more (got and Ipad2 didn't like coz I wasn't using it much then got ipad3 which I use everyday more than my PC).
It really depends on the user. I used to play games a lot Download a lot of movies so overall a PC is better for me. I am starting to play games less and less and most of the time when I am online I am either watching movies, reading blogs and other websites and I find it a lot easier to do it on my iPad. The interface on the iPad is simple to use and runs decently fast.
Not sure if Microsoft is heading the right directions with this. Sure the idea is great but it might not sell out due to their poor OS. Let's face it everytime microsoft release a new OS there are tons and tons of bugs and usually it takes a good at least a yea with updates to get it somewhat decent.
I am not even sure if I want to buy a computer when the old I am using crap out on me. This might capture some users who likes the windiwos enviorment but for a more casual base user they would perfer iPad coz is much much easier to use than Windows product. My parents could easier use my iPad without much issue but when they are on win7 is so much more harder for them.

its like a OS for Dummies people have been praising it for its ease of use and speed
but i can't get over those tiles that look like they're for kids/the hard of seeing
windows 8 refreshes things a bit over windows phone 7 but its still a bit :/ for me (however i wouldnt mind a tablet despite the metro ui)
pick up a windows phone at a cellular kiosk and you'll see
While the hardware looks promising I have to wonder why MS decided to announce it. There were just as many "missing" details as announced ones. Nothing on which Nvidia SoC in the RT tablet. Nothing on the types of screens. Nothing on battery life. No firm ship date. No firm price. No partners with software to demo (the biggest mistake, IMO). It's really all just vapor ware.
I think they should have done this in fall when they're finished and can give us all the details. Oh, and being able to say "you can order one starting tomorrow" instead of "will be available in the fall with the Pro coming 90 days later" would have been a huge plus.
