Nope.. Stampede is located downtown, about 20ish mins from the airport.

A few things to mention.....

The first day (or morning) is slightly less crowded because everyone is too busy watching the parade still.. lol

If you have kids, free entry and pancake breakfast if you go super early on "Kids day" and "Family day".. but it will be packed!

"Nashville North" down on the grounds is always known to be a drunkfest!
The city basically shuts down and goes party mode, so the clubs will for sure have something going on..
I tend to hit up the tents instead (Wildhorse Saloon, Cowboys).. bigger, better atmosphere but line-ups can get stupid long.

There's a couple ways to get down to the grounds, but it's hard to say which is easier or convenient for you..
1) Park-N-Ride. Park at a c-train station and head over.. you can get off directly outside one of the entrances.
2) Taxi. Simple and easy enough.
3) Drive yourself. Traffic will suck around the area, approx $12 parking, and you'll probably need a DD after if you're drinking.

I probably forgot to mention some other things but if you have any questions, feel free to message me as I'm in Calgary at the moment...

Mr.HappySilp 06-27-2012 03:08 PM

Wheres a good place inside the stampede for some killer good BBQ?

Looking for suggestions for things to do at the stampede/ calgary this weekend

MR_BIGGS 07-10-2012 06:43 AM

I just spent three days at my very first Stampede and have to say, Calgary knows how to party. This is on par or better than the parties that were happening during the Olympics.

As far as the racism comments go, there were twelve of us, visable minorities and not once did any of us feel racism from people. We're not an itimadating group either; just didn't experience what a few of you said we would.

Unfortunately we weren't able to secure a hotel downtown, so we opted for the Radison near the Airport, about 20 minutes from downtown. Considering every place was to capacity, and we got all us in one location was a plus.

On Friday we went to the nightclub West. We did bottles on the rooftop. What an amazing party. Everyone there is just down to party.

On Saturday we decided to do a pub crawl that started at 2 pm. The second stop was Cowboys, one of the places to be in Calgary during Stampede. Since it was our second stop and we didn't want to leave the place we decided to stay. So from 4pm until 1 am we (most of us) stayed. I've never been in a place with so many attractive woman barely wearing any clothing. A single guy could do some damage.... Another weird thing about the pub crawl was that they didn't ID us. There were some girls on that bus that didn't look of age....

Cowboys was amazing! Highly recommend people go there for at least a couple hours. Long lineups to get in though. I also heard Ranchman's is good, but we didn't end up there.

Getting a cab was next to impossible, so try and plan ahead. If you can, get a limo. Split between ten+ people you are in good shape.

Not sure where these racism concerns are coming from..

I used to go over there pretty regularly, never ever had a problem. Being an Asian kid (well, 3/4, anyway), everyone was always super friendly and welcoming there.
I'd even go so far as to say that the Whites are more accepting towards the Asians, than the Asians are to the Whites.

Really bummed that I had to miss the Stampede this year :(
Going next year FA SHO

Glad you had fun.. The thing is even once stampede is over its not like the Olympics where everyone turned back into stuck up Vancouverites... People are always friendly in Calgary.. I need to look into this place that has a roof top patio though. I dont think I've ever been there.

The derby they're referring to is most likely the chuckwagon races..
Try calling the Stampede office (403) 269-9822 to see if you can buy any reserved tickets that haven't been picked up.
I think they also release some rush seats every day at 11am but they go super quick. Otherwise your next option is scalpers..

Yep at Mac's you can get 2 admissions for $25 (reg. admission is $16)
At Costco, you can get $50 in stampede bucks for only $40 that you can use for anything too.

For BBQ, try to find the Big T's BBQ stand. Otherwise there's some good places downstairs of the Corral building.

If you make your way here, will you bring along your trippy stick? :fullofwin:

West is a great spot (especially the patio)! The service can be hit or miss though..
Cowboys is also the place to be this year.. same with Nashville North (if you don't mind country and two-stepping.. it is Stampede afterall lol)
This year avoid Wildhorse if you can... unless you're willing to line up for over 1.5hrs, pay $25 cover, and get weak drinks!
Ranchman's is pretty awesome too, the only thing is that it's not located downtown..

Unforunately the cab situation has always been crappy here.. Stampede will make it even worse.
DD companies would be an alternative if you have a car. Keys Please 1-866-586-5397 or Driver's Choice (403) 216-2630 is good.
Hell, since I can't party until the weekend.. if you guys can't get a cab at all, I can PM my # and I'll be your DD haha

Oh yeah, check out FlapJackFinder for all the free Stampede breakfasts around town!

thegentleman 07-11-2012 03:17 PM

Will be heading up this weekend! Super stoked.

The only people that would ever say there's racism there are dumbasses that buy into the stereotypical "cowboy... yeehaw" image and probably have never been there.

Ya sure, there are racists there. There are racists here too, and everywhere else. But the chances of having a confrontation is so stupidly low, it's not even worth thinking about.

murd0c 07-13-2012 09:58 AM

So talking to Vansterdam I told him he better take pics and post them of the slutty cow girls. Since it's not local he can post them right:fullofwin:

MR_BIGGS 07-14-2012 09:07 PM

So many beautiful girls there. When I was at Cowboys, I honestly thought they had a ugly person quota or something. The majority of girls in there were attractive.

thegentleman 07-16-2012 12:42 PM

Did the pub crawl on the Friday night that started at 730pm. 4 clubs + transportation to each club (party bus) with no line waiting/cover + 1 free drink for 50 bucks. Great deal and its where I had most of my fun. I didn't experience any racial profiling, as long as you participated in the event (dressed up/danced to country) you we're good.

Fairgrounds is practically the same thing as the PNE here. But with better food choices. I wasn't able to try the pulled pork parfait, which was probably my biggest let down. Demolished a jumbo turkey leg, smoked meat sandwich, and giant deep fried onion fries.

The girls are attractive as fuck. Everyone was so friendly, I loved the environment. Will definitely come back again, but a little more prepared. Gotta do some touch ups on my line dancing. Haha.
