Wisdom tooth removal experiences?
 

Hey Guys I'll post here since the health discussion forum has been so dead and i havent been getting any replies there :okay:

So how do you guys determine the right time to take out your wisdom tooth(s)? Do you wait for it to come out more before taking it out? Do you guys wait until it hurts (bumping into your other teeth)? Or do you guys listen to your dentist and take it out when they say it has grown since your last visit?

My case is this:

-I have two at the bottom back of my mouth
-one has a bit of cavity on it
-one is growing sideways (but no pain so far)
-the other one has come out a bit (but not sideways)
-I'm 24 years old, should the tooth stop growing at this age and onwards or no?

so my question is, should i go do the removal soon? or wait until it hurts? It doesnt bug me at all right now and i'm getting mixed advises, some say do it and some say wait for it :suspicious:

any advice would be highly appreciated :)

I think you should do it soon? does growing sideways make it harder to remove or will have further complications if you remove it later?

The younger you are the faster and easier it is for your body to recover.

my dentist just told me that sideways will bump into the tooth in the front

The one with a cavity should be extracted ASAP before further complications. You may need to see an oral surgeon for this.

i went to an oral surgeon (Dr Richard Chau in Richmond) today but for sure they will tell you to take it out since they want the business

I just had two wisdom teeth removed from Dr. Chau in Richmond (Would highly recommend as well.)

I would do it preemptively instead of waiting for it to become a problem. If you want to make sure you can get some professional scans and x-rays done at an Orbit lab and then either book an appointment with an oral surgeon/specialist or if you trust your dentist to do a good job then you can go ahead with them.

Oral surgeons charge more (400-500 per tooth) compared to dentists who charge a hundred bucks or so less. Even if it does not hurt now, it might be a good idea to get it removed because it could start moving your teeth.

well its something that you only do once..... so it doesn't really matter if you spend the money now or later, but then you should do it when you're younger + especially if you have a cavity.

Nah. It's before you want further complications in your mouth.. It's really for your own good.

If it gets so bad, it will start affecting your jaw bone, then you're gonna be fucked and suffer lots of pain. Maybe require reconstructive surgery after that. But then again, this is the absolute worse case scenario.

btw, you should milk UBC's insurance since it's your last year :p

My experience was that I had four growing forwards horizontally instead of the upper ones growing down and lower ones growing up. I wouldn't have known until I had my X-ray.

Even though I had no pain, the x ray showed that the teeth were pushing my teeth all together causing them to start overlapping. Had to pull 4 wisdom teeth out as well as 4 molers and I got braces for 2 years.

so since i'm 24, will the wisdom tooth continue growing as i age?

my dad says that the tooth will stop growing by this age but :heckno: to his advises

so i dunno what to do...

so has the pain gone away? how long ago was this?

I had mine out at 21, all 4. From dentists recommendations.

Looked liked a chipmunk for 3 days with swollen cheeks.
Ate normally after a week or so.
Had painkillers but pain was not terrible.
Stuck with weird holes in the back of my mouth for couple months.

Had them removed Monday at 1pm. Hurt after the anesthesia wore off at about 3:30 up until I went to sleep. I got all the prescription medicine needed including T3, however I don't think the T3 is completely necessary. Extra strength advil should do the trick, as well as ice on the cheek 30 min each side. By the time I woke up the next morning I felt fine. Still couldn't eat anything besides congee and other soft foods up until now but everything feels pretty good.

I didn't get mine out til I was in my late 20's. Just the lower 2 and yes, they do continue to grow out. The problem with waiting is that they can impact the tooth in front and start shifting your teeth and cause bite misalignment, jaw problems and just make your teeth look fucked up. Another potential problem is that food can get trapped between the molar and wisdom tooth and cause damage to the molar.

Just do it now and get it over with.

Get it over with now. The worst part is just the healing process and it's not even that bad. They'll just give you T3's

u chose the injection numbing method and not the sleep method right?

btw where did u get all your prescriptions? the place right under Dr Chau?

i heard some places are cheaper than others for prescriptions

it's not really the pain, but the numbness that sucks. I've said it once, and i'll say it again, the anesthesia shot is worth it.

is anesthesia the method where you get an injection and you go to sleep (extra $336)? or is it just for the numbness (basic)

doesnt everyone has to get the basic injection for the surgery?

Costco should be the cheapest place. I also stocked up on yogurt, meal replacement drinks (ensure) and juice to last a couple of days. It's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, just make sure to follow the specific advice given to you and it will be fine. Funny thing is today I called Pho Ten and asked how much a bowl of pho and noodles would cost and they said around 7.75$ with tax :/

Oh yeah and yes, I chose the Injection method and brought some noise canceling headphones, though you can still hear them drilling and cutting. The most painful part is actually the injection, especiay since I hate needles. Make sure they give you enough and they test if you can feel anything or else you May end up having a bad time.

other than costco, where else has cheaper prescriptions? (i don't have a costco membership card)

has anyone taken out wisdom tooth(s) out on 2 different occasions? say 1 this time and 1 the next time? or better to do them both at once?

If it hurts, and your dentist tells you to get them removed, that probably will give you a better answer than a car forum. If they continue to grow sideways, you are going to end up paying for a lot more than just removing them. Fixing your fucked up grill will cost you some serious cash when your teeth start shifting together.

I forget to mention, I had maximum allowable anesthesia during operation. Dentist told me he couldn't legally use anymore on me :dead:
