American couple detained by U.S. customs, busted for bringing Kinder Eggs back home.

U.S. Homeland Security is certainly strict when it comes to protecting American borders.

American border guards sent a U.S. couple to a detention centre for more than two hours because they brought chocolate Kinder Eggs across the border.

A guard warned them that they faced a possible fine of $2500 per egg!

Kinder Eggs are considered illegal in the U.S. because children can choke on the small plastic toys inside the eggs.

The dude should have bought Angry Birds dolls instead and avoid the hassle.

Nothing new about this. It pops up in the media once every couple years, then fades away... until the next person is caught with 'em.

Media sensationalism, nothing more.

Redlines_Daily 07-18-2012 05:25 PM

the media should sensationalize the fuck out of it so that people are aware. Seriously over zealous border guards though, can't they just take the eggs and let the people be on their way? Jesus

if you sensationalize a story like this it makes a bunch of people think border guards are all brain dead idiots, similar to how people think cops love to beat innocent people up etc.

1. Carefully split chocolate from inner plastic shell
2. empty toy out of plastic shell
3. fill plastic shell with your choice of drugs
4. Re-cover with chocolate shell
5. ????
6. PROFIT!

There's one problem with where the media is going wrong with this story; it's not that Kinder Eggs are illegal because the toys can cause children to choke to death (if that's the case, Lego wouldn't be legal in the good ol' USofA), it's because of an old prohibition enacted back in the '30's that has never been repealed.

The 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act contains a section highlighting that a confectionary product with a non-nutritive object, partially or totally imbedded within it, cannot be sold within the United States, unless the FDA issues a regulation that the non-nutritive object has functional value.[8] Essentially, the 1938 Act bans "the sale of any candy that has imbedded in it a toy or trinket.

^true

border and custom agents have a lot of discretion when it comes to minor stuffs like this.. (my gf was busted for brining some meat into Canada unknowingly, border agent said she could face like a few thousand dollars in fines, she showed them some teary eyes and they let him go without any fines or warning)

The couple was probably talking back at the agents hence why they got arrested... border and custom agents tend to be very egoistic
