first time I have heard of this guy, so whats so special about him?
Super rich Founded $$$$$$$$$$ a massively popular site that had 50 million users a day . US gov wanted it shut down do to piracy so the Australian police raid his mansion and lock him up. Now is waiting extradition to the US.
His first video. Universal music tried to sensor it. Check out all the famous people in the video.
He made millions stealing and selling the intellectual property that belonged to other people and when he finally gets arrested he whines about freedom. How about the freedom of the property owners to not have their property ripped off? ...and I believe he was living in New Zealand when he got busted. He's a hacker and thief & money launderer who stole over $500m of other people's property, among other things

Now isn't that what the internet is for? The internet is like a place where u can say or search whatever u want. If the goverment takes away our internet. Its like taking away our freedom. That's why we should say no to all those bills that their thinking on passing right now.

I wouldn't debate what this guy did was pretty fucking shady, the website wasn't exactly legal in any sense.
However there can be zero debate whether the actions the US Government & various industries took to arrest the guy and shut down the website were right, they were not, and that is what represents the danger.
Fuck $$$$$$$$$$ and Kim Dotcom but don't ignore the real issue at hand.
Quote:
Justice Helen Winkelmann said the warrants used when more than 90 New Zealand officers stormed the $$$$$$$$$$ founder's home and other properties in January were too broadly cast, "lacking adequate specificity as to the offence". "The search and seizure was therefore illegal," she ruled, adding that it was "clear that the police, in executing the warrants, have exceeded what they could lawfully be authorised to do".
FBI agents who copied data from $$$$$$$$$$ founder Kim Dotcom's computers and took it overseas were not acting illegally because information isn't "physical material", the Crown says.
....
"If [they] went offshore without the consent of the attorney-general, it was an illegal act."Mr Akel said that there had been an agreement that none of the evidence against Dotcom, seized after his arrest, would be provided to the FBI without prior agreement.
However, Crown lawyer John Pike, for the attorney-general, said the material stored on the hard drives could be shipped overseas for the FBI to examine because it did not constitute "physical" material.
His site was just a place to store files just like those places people rent to store there stuff. The people who rent out storage lockers are not responsible for the stuff inside the locker so why is $$$$$$$$$$ any different?

MU was an innovative mechanism for sharing content . People who download movies and music on a regular basis are going to do it regardless, he saw the opportunity and capitalized on it. The RIAA and MPAA are just butt hurt someone else is making money and they aren't getting cut.

The people that upload content are technically liable for what they upload, yet the US government pulls this shit to show how big of a dick they have.
A man builds a plaza, and people are caught doing drugs on the property. What the government did is arrest the plaza owner, not the drug users.
that analogy fits. i remember one of the accusation was that MU employees were not regulating the upload of copyright content and even as far as uploading the content themselves.
MU is censored because Google doesn't allow websites it's affiliated with to have links to their downloads.
The sites dead and no one is providing links. It's like not being able to type the word al qaeda because they are terrorists. But it's not a big deal. Funny thing Youtube who is owned by google does not censor the word.

I see what you mean, but you can't deney that he prob knew that sharing the copyright stuff was his bread and butter. The guy that owns the plaza has a bunch of ppl coming in and operate an gambling den down stairs and brings him monthly rent, like subscriptions.
He technically is not operating a gambling den, but he's not really doing anything to stop it either unless someone complains (owners of the material being shared). He would then remove one or two files to get rid of the problem.
I mean, Napster was a file sharing program too, right? It just had some bad ppl sharing copyright stuff. It's a pretty thin line and IMO he's hiding behind the "It's just a legal file sharing site and bad ppl happen to use it for bad purposes". I think that argument would be valid if there was a real effort to prevent it. 95% of the stuff uploaded is copyright, and he knows it.

you forget the part where he didn't just steal it, he shared it with billions of people.
you probably benefited from his work.
your logic is flawed.
so someone that comes up with an idea, before anyone else, can "own" that idea (which someone else can easily come up with), and reap the benefits of being the "first"? i invent or come up with X. and X is used by billions, so i keep all the profits of X for myself?
Shouldn't the right thing to do, be to give X out for free? everyone should have the right to use X?
isn't that what he sorta did? but we are all humans, he benefited more from it than me or you. but in a way, we all benefited.
kinda like robin hood, steal what everyone should have the right to, and give it to people for free. I don't mind if robin hood takes a slightly higher cut. i mean, he did do all the work.
