Let's Talk Amerika haven't read a blog this entertaining in so long and yes some applies to North American culture as a whole since we live by American tv..music..sports etc Before you TL;DR at least try the intro Quote:
Spoiler! 10 Things Most Americans Don’t Know About America |
Good read. Its quite possible that some americans think that since their economics have changed so rapidly. Like they say how they were once the older brother where everyone looks up to them but not every country does. Their mentality was always "I am better than you." However, theres so many more countries who are catching up in global causes, technology, etc... Ppl might mock china and might still look down at their country but remember that they were once very poor, and now they have established themselves, look at their army, tanks, infrastructure, global economy and even set up space shuttle... Even sent the first woman astronaut in space. This might not be impressive to most ppl... But still, its a step forward from being poor. In fact, when I visited Mexico, the locals were so friendly and polite even they could tell I am a tourist but oftentimes visiting the states, ppl seem to be more distant and have a "No good customer service oriented attitude." Just my 2 cents |

lol good read. pretty sure these are all true with canada as well. well id add "we think we are the nicest" and "we are the safest" and "we have great healthcare" to the list when we arent/dont |

Yes, my new coworker ACTUALLY thinks that |
In the recent years I've become very anti western culture. he is right, you don't realise it till you fucking leave, and go somewhere else. then you really realise how fucked up and closed minded most people from the west are. the west is this evil fucking pit that spews ignorance, arrogance, and hate (of course we have good stuff like, innovation, but that is quickly shrinking, and no one likes to listen to assholes). most people that defend it, or attack others are the ones that are most deeply ingrained in the culture. They're also most likely the ones that have never left north america, and feel unsafe and "alone" when outside of their western culture. i just hope as time goes on, as travelling becomes cheaper and easier for everyone, people will adapt a "global" culture. letting go of dogmas and other traditional cultural views. |
Traveling in Europe brought me to this same conclusion. I do love it here and will stay for at least the time being but if I had the opportunity to move to Germany, France, Italy, Spain etc. I would likely take it. The people who say "don't let the door hit you on the way out" haven't traveled. |
i disagree with ulic on Westerners being close-minded they sometimes do have this 'we-better-than-you' mentality though again like the article...this is just very broad generalizations. I felt the article really hit home when it talked about how consumerism has really changed the american psyche. But really, competition and striving to be the best and outdoing everyone else really isn't a negative IMO. One can also argue that comfort can mean happiness. One thing I did learn from the write-up is to not always be a tourist when you go traveling...try living like the locals is a pretty good idea to gain new perspectives |
To be perfectly honest, I don't even think you need to leave North America to appreciate other countries. Yes, it's absolutely better that you do, but in order ot do it from your own home, you simply have to open up your mind and listen to people from other nations, even those who have immigrated here. People's other experiences and opinions are just as important as those you go through yourself. That said, I've spent some time in Europe and it is a completely different place than North America. Generally speaking, people are far nicer over there than here, and far fewer things are "taboo" to talk about. I'd love to move to Germany, France or Italy if given the chance. It's just so much... better over there. |

watching and listening and acting and saying "oh that's cool." is DIFFERENT from actually participating and embracing it. just knowing, seeing, and hearing about it is not enough. that's just some story and you're still taking your perspective on it. closed minded is not opening your mind and actually embracing and living the other perspective. you gotta remember the foundation of america. it's all the christian extremists and prudes that got kicked outta europe, lol even the catholics hated them.. example would be how progressive europe is, and then people here go there and see, then come back here and MOST of the time, laugh about how weird or gay it is over there over dinner with their buddies. there's very few people that achieve a global culture. they don't act any one culture, it's just universal. until you achieve that level, you are still ignorant. if you choose to follow traditions or any dogmas of any culture, you're below that level. not that it's BAD. but any rational person has to admit that that's logically sound. the only reason you follow what you follow, is because you believe it is better than some other culture. imagine a child, every year he has to move to a different country. since birth, every year being raised somewhere different. never staying in one place. that would be a global personality. s/he would act the way PEOPLE act without borders or cultures. we, on the other hand, are not so lucky. we have to travel, and fucking force ourselves to let go of all these little comforts we identify and associate ourselves with, to truly embrace what's out there, and become a more important part of a whole. watching people build the bridge, i appreciate their hard work, so i can cross the damn river. but i don't actually embrace their work. you have to do it yourself to understand it in and out, so you can accurate gauge it in your life. watching and listening are only a fraction of the effort required. |
Oh, I completely agree, Ulic. However, for those who are unable to travel for whatever reason, the next best thing they can do is to step off their high horse and at least understand the reasons why another country is how they are. |

Anyways, to add my own observations to the blogger's extensive list. I've also observed in my travels and my time outside of Canada that Western (US & Canada) views regarding sex are practically archaic. (And that's taking into account how supposedly sexualized were supposed to be coming from an MTV culture; lol go figure.). Also, Before I got married, partying & clubbing is more fun in practically anwhere else other than US/Canada. Parties/clubs everywhere else IS actually about... partying. It came as a huge shock to me when I first stepped out of the country as my younger days, my environment has led me to believe that the party/club atmosphere is about... sizing people up... sizing other people's posse up... posing like you're a "somebody" in Vancouver... competing with other parties for the lions' pride... etc. Anywhere else I've been, you walk into a party joint, guys won't step up to you as "their competition," they actually come to you (guy or girl) because it's a party and everyone should be drinking' and hangin' together; and by everyone I mean both guys and girls. Seriously... In my previous observation, it's almost a night and day difference. Oh, and whoever said the "transit" comment is right fucking on. |
So all these guys saying "if they had a chance to move to europe" what's stopping you? Don't see what's hard about it. |
^ finding work and obtaining either a visa or immigrant status is the usual stumbling block. |
I've been to Europe myself and it's a great place to be if you're middle class and have a secure public sector job or a job with a big company. But if you're dark-skinned, and are under-privileged, it's a pretty shitty place to be. Germany is the only country that's doing well - all of the other countries are in the tank compared to developing countries in Asia. Has anyone spent time in any of the immigrant ghettos outside of Paris, for example? |
|
TLDR cole notes plz jk!! Great Fucking read, loved it. |

I've only heard stories about the certain suburbs outside Paris. My French roommate/co-worker when I was in London was telling me how it's becoming ghetto like the slums in the states. |
France is pretty bad outside Paris, but Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, Holland, Austria etc. are all quite nice. Even in the pooer areas. Everyone seems a lot more content with what they have and live a solid life. I think overall the wealth is lower but it's more even. There is not a big gap between the wealthy and poor (aside from your obvious places like Monaco, St. Tropaz etc. |
good find OP. Quote:
the extent to which people are closed minded here is fucking ridiculous. for the most part, one would try and tell people here other ways of doing things, or different perspectives, and they shun you. they may even get mad. they may not see ANY value or advantage. they may even drop the line "well everyone is different". No you asshole, youre a fucking human being too whose sperm just happened to take a left turn. the mainstream media is the epitome of ignorance, arrogance and hate. people gobble up this CNN bullshit." America is out there to save the world". Most people lack any critical thinking. They cannot even comprehend the fact that with some basic knowledge of history, intent/purpose, or bias....with these facets they can really see why some things are the way they are. its disgusting how many people cannot even think for themselves. it probably scares them. or they most likely lack a foundation of general knowledge we were suppose to been have taught in even our very shitty education system. you would be surprised how when you try to bring up basic principles of the scientific method, or even logical reasoning/fallacies ...how many people fail to understand just a spec of what you are getting at |
