First time I tried Ding Tai Fung was in Hong Kong. DinTaiFung Global Sites
I was very pleased and happy with the food and was very excited to try the restaurant in Bellevue.
Now, they have come to Vancouver.
Shanghai Xiao Long Bao Restaurant Shanghai Xiaolongbao Restaurant

Wait where does it say that; thats the Din Tai Fung?
It's not even listed under Din Tai Fung's website nor its under that name.
Also the Din Tai Fung in Bellevue sucks, it's not right. I have tried the one in Taiwan, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and USA. They are all a lot better than the one in USA

| Shanghai Ding Tai Fung Shanghai Din Tai Fung - Downtown - Vancouver, BC
While there is no Canada listed on their website, they do have a restaurant in Ontario so their website may not be up-to-date.
If I can find something more conclusive, I will post it up.

perhaps someone currently in TPE can give them a quick call?

Unless they changed their logo, that logo looks really fake lol... Looks like they went to the mall to get that sign made, with standard fonts even for the logo
Also the Japanese is wrong on it
Also afaik the name is " Din Tai Fung" not " Shanghai Ding Tai Fung"
Fake? Or just a really horrible franchisee? |

The picture of the sign is not the same as the link you posted. That pic is located on Alberni St and the link is to a place on Richards.

from yelp Quote:
THIS IS NOT THE REAL DIN TAI FUNG - do not be fooled!!
The restaurant had to change their name after trying to use the name from the infamous Din Tai Fung.
We came here because it was close to Gastown and it's one of the few Chinese restaurants in downtown. The food was ok, it wasn't spectacular but acceptable.
The waiter kept forcing me to order food saying it wasn't enough, giving the impression that their portions are small. I was with 5 other people and he kept saying order more, order more, not enough, for sure not enough! At the end of it I had to put my foot down and be like, this is ALL we're ordering. And the waiter said, "well, this is for sure not enough, for sure, but I'll put in the order for now."
After all the food came, it was too much. Felt so ripped off.

You don't need to register anything for trademark /copyright. As long as you can prove that you have the name before the infringer you will probably win.
However with the court cost, long lead time and short lifespan of restaurants in Vancouver.. it is probably a waste of time and money. Most Chinese restaurants think more of the balance sheet than hiring lawyers. Quote:

The original name of the restaurant was going to be Ding Tai Fung, but due to copyright, the name was changed to Shanghai Xiaolongbao Restaurant.

The latest place i when to was Shanghai Xiao Long Bao Restaurant on Richards street downtown. The view inside the restaurant is quite high-class and very welcoming. I went with my friend, we were not very hungry only looking for a small snack. The waiter was very kind and friendly when taking our order(offering water and such). He insisted we try their infamous xiao long bao, and so we did. The xiao long bao dumplings were extremely tasty with enough soup to fill the big chinese spoons. The soup inside the xiao long bao was a mouthful of delicious flavours that one can only describe through words. I highly recommend others to go check this place out if you're near by or have some spare time. ^_^ cheeeerrs

Was pretty excited too when the coming soon signs were posted months ago. Only to realize it was a fake.
If a real DTF was coming, they would pick a helluva better location.

bellvue one was trash and there was like 15+ mexicans making the Xiao long bao LOL and it was trash. Xiao long bao @ dinesty richmond is good | When I heard that a DTF was opened up in Bellevue I instantly grabbed my foodie group and drove down there! I've heard stories of the DTF's in Asia being super popular and good!
Boy were we dissappointed ... they have an open kitchen with huge windows that you can peer into while waiting in line (yes there was about a 40min lineup because it just opened) ... and ... my first reaction was WTF because there was like 15 Mexicans crammed into that kitchen pumping out XLB's!... I was like "ok I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they were properly trained by the real XLB masters here at DTF" ... and uhh ... yeah let's just say that there are easily dozen's of Shanghainese/Taiwanese restaurants in Vancouver that make much better XLBs and for much cheaper.
I ordered a Tan Tan noodles and it was the smallest bowl of noodles I've ever seen and it was like $9 and it tasted horrible!
I left the place thinking that DTF should just stay in Seattle if that is their standard of quality because they wouldn't even be able to compete with the local shops.
