One of the highest rating comments on globeandmail? or some other newspaper I read it on said that most people complain that we are becoming less friendly and no one really says hi to anyone anymore. ie. no one greets their neighbours or strike conversations with strangers etc.

it's very unfortunate and should not happen, but society is fucked when an attempt to be friendly could cost you your life

You have to look at it from every angle.

If I was living on the South Side of Chicago, I'd wanna fucking gun on my hip everyday. There are about the same number of murders among Chicago's 2.7+million people every year than the entire country of Canada.

Could you imagine 500 people being killed in the GVRD in a year? Mind boggling. The populations are not too far off.

Americans are bombarded with fear mongering bullsh!t through the media 10-fold compared to us.

Fuck, I remember watching local TV in WA state, and they were going through all the pedophiles/predators who lived near your house, including pictures, crimes, etc.

Who the fuck would let their kids play outside?

The government is not to blame, the people aren't, it's the sensationalist media (which I guess is a part of the people).

People are literally paranoid about their children being abducted, terrorists blowing up buildings, radiation blowing in from Japan, you name it, the social media channels serve it up on a platter.

80% of the people in the world are just normal. Normal people just take what they're given.

Overall, its a big sad mess, but I feel sorry for that cop, more than anything else.

The Cop is spinning things in a very strange way; as if the daylight and paved path made the 'incident' more egregious, and he seems to take the bewildered look on the young mens' faces as evidence that he had foiled their perceived ill intentions. I tend to think, the 'aggressive, disrespectful, and menacing,' way the young men approached in was not as described, and actually a manipulation of reality to suit the Cop's paranoia.

Given that most reasonable readers of this article would come to a similar conclusion of the letter and incident as a whole, it can be pretty widely agreed upon that the officer was unjust in his rude behaviour and even more so in writing the disrespectful letter. Only the most idiotically fanatic gun advocate (such as, 2damaxmr2) would consider this a reasonable case study for why carrying a hand gun should be permitted for personal protection, as the Cop tries to make it out as.

America happens to have a lot of idiotically fanatic gun advocates, however, or so we Canadians tend to think at times. So, I re-posted this article on a forum dominated by Americans to see what the general reaction towards the incident would be. I was pleasantly surprised at the response. Even the gun totin' Americans unanimously agreed, the Cop is a complete paranoid idiot, and they would all have simply responded to the question like a sane and rational human being. Refreshing. Southerners were blaming the fact that he's a Northerner, and thereby unfriendly by nature

Reminds me of gang mentality and the reasoning of gangs to carry weapons - to protect themselves.

Exactly... Gang members need guns in case some other gang tries to shoot them up.
I'm not in any gang or associated with those type of people. No one's targeting me.
Why would I feel the need to walk around carrying a gun with me at all times for protection?

If their intentions were as he suggests, and the gun laws were as he suggests, he would probably have been shot himself.

You can't argue with gun fanatics. These are the same idiots that think Assualt Rifles should be legal to the open market so that the common citizen can defend himself from the tyrant of government. Let's get a reality check here, the common citizen will NEVER be able to fight the government with weapons, it will NEVER happen in the US.

One of the things that drove me crazy after the shootings in Arrora (sp?) was that some NRA types were arguing that if there were more people packing heat in the theater, the gunman would've been taken down. Are you fucking kidding me? Look how many friendly fire incidents that have happened in Iraq/Afghanistan, and these are trained soldiers. You think some two-bit asshole cop-wannabe can take a good shot at someone without hitting a bystander? Give me a break.

Not like it matters at this point in the US anyways, they say there is something like 500 million weapons floating around in the States, the ship has already sailed, there's nothing that can be done. I wonder if regulation could come through the ammo side of things?

FUCK......I got into a heated debate on a vw forum about this, with the end result of me being called "retard, faggot canadian, etc.... Almost every single person seemed to think life is a movie, and that gunfights are always won by the good guy. One 17 year old kid who had never held a gun in his life said "this is why I love that my state has relaxed gun laws, so when I'm 18 I can carry one everywhere. That way this will never happen when I'm around." No joke. Pretty fucking scary to think when you make that snap decision, put that bullet into the kid and in his hand is a bag of candy, not a fucking gun.
I'm not even super anti gun, I think having a gun or guns is perfectly reasonable, but carrying one around on a daily basis is a recipe for one bad decision/overreaction to be a complete disaster.

It's the typical ignorant american attitude when they run out of things to say in a debate, they always resort to name calling Canadians. It's a weak minded tactic.

17 years old on a VW forum, well that says it all right there.

Wow. If I ever get filthy rich, I am def. starting up a company, "Gunfight Getaways: the ultimate tour for gun lovers".

Basically, gun lovers like that kid sign up, and we will have a fleet of helicopters and pilots ready. The tourists get airlifted to a secret destination blindfolded (its a surprise!) and we'll also have a camera filming their faces when they realize we dropped them off alone in the middle of Juarez or a Congo jungle or something. Survival only imagineable, ya lil shit lololol

The cop is an idiot and a coward. By-product of fear-driven mainstream media in the states.

That being said, I wonder how many of us would have the same thought pattern if we grew up in that kind of environment?

Food for thought.
