Egg yolks almost as bad for your heart as smoking cigarettes?

Egg yolks almost as bad for your heart as smoking cigarettes, says study - NY Daily News

In terms of cardiovascular risks, the yolk-based sauce that makes the dish so good is almost as bad for you as smoking cigarettes, researchers in Canada found.

“One jumbo chicken egg yolk has about 237 milligrams of cholesterol,” study author Dr. David Spence told CNN.

Spence explains that eating large amounts of cholesterol causes plaque buildup in the blood vessels, the same way smoking does.

When plaque builds up, the artery walls become thicker, limiting the amount of blood that can get through the vessels to the heart and upping risk for heart disease.

His research, published online in the journal Atherosclerosis, found that people who eat egg yolks regularly have about 2/3 as much plaque buildup as smokers.

Yolk-lovers’ buildup “follows a similar pattern to that of cigarette smoking,” researchers wrote.

People who ate three or more yolks per week had significantly more buildup than those who ate two or less yolks per week.

Spence, a neurology professor at the University of Western Ontario’s medical school, and two colleagues looked at more than 1,200 patients for the research.

All already had carotid plaque issues or a family history of cardiovascular disease. Their average age was about 60 years old, but Spence stresses that cardiovascular health is important at all ages.

“Just because you are 20 doesn’t mean egg yolks aren’t going to cause any trouble down the line,” he told CNN.

Spence says researchers chose to compare the effects of eating egg yolks with the effects of smoking to provide people with perspective, as eating yolks is typically considered “insignificant” compared to smoking.

But some health experts say it isn’t a fair comparison.

Not sure about the validity of the study.. but I eat about 10 eggs a week.

It's a myth.

eggs have gone from bad for u to ok in moderation to ok even not so much in moderation to now as bad as cigarettes from what i've heard over the last few years....i just stopped paying attention

willystyle 08-17-2012 12:46 PM

Cholesterol (LDL) is only a concern if you eat it with a high carbohydrate diet.

afadafa 08-17-2012 12:49 PM

All I have to say is, like the last line states, it's an improper comparison. A tactic in grabbing public attention.

Energy 08-17-2012 12:52 PM

At least I don't get egg yolk cravings or feel like I NEED to eat egg yolks. Not that I take the article seriously in the first place.

duy- 08-17-2012 12:57 PM

theres good cholesterol and bad cholesterol, either way it goes up and down depending on your diet and life style where as smoking has no benefits. in short, who cares, eggs are awesome, great source of protein, delicious, and yeah i guess you can eat only egg whites.. but you could also fuck with a condom on for the rest of your life too

kwy 08-17-2012 12:58 PM

Every 5 years, research comes out that declares eggs as unhealthy. 5 years later new research comes out that rebuffs it. This cycle repeats indefinitely.

dangonay 08-17-2012 01:10 PM

I'm waiting for the study that shows egg yolks cause lung cancer.

I agree. Just like all the studies on coffee. One year its bad, the next year it's good, etc.

^That's what I'm assuming too.

But having said that, what are they grabbing public attention for? Just the hell of it? The article didn't name-drop any companies. Maybe this "doctor" is just trying to make a name for himself with random researches. Or some egg-white company paid him off to publish that study :suspicious:

Ikkaku 08-17-2012 03:42 PM

The researchers keep changing their findings. Every few years it'll cycle from life ending cholesterol to negligible cholesterol. How about just eating in moderation?

And egg yolk isn't the only 'dangerous' foods you're eating anyways, so forget the research and live a happy life eating whatever the hell you want.

BaoTurbo 08-17-2012 04:39 PM

I call bs as long as you work the cholestrol off it should be fine

RRxtar 08-17-2012 05:10 PM

eating cholesterol does not directly cause cholesterol in healthy people. cholesterol problems are sort of hereditary more than environmental. the sentence in that article that jumps off the page is "more than 1,200 patients for the research. All already had carotid plaque issues or a family history of cardiovascular disease."

and high cholesterol does not mean high bad cholesterol. there is a difference

Vale46Rossi 08-17-2012 05:26 PM

I had 6 eggs today :D

Sick of all these contradicting and useless studies
How about we focus on things that actually matter...finding cures and solving real world problems.

Exactly. It's like taking a test sampling group of people who have family histories of cancer and then being surprised when XX or YY is fed to them and seeing said people be tested positive for cancer.

Useless test is useless.
