Sign up for a credit card without 'knowing' it....

TL;DR:
While filling up gas, a person approached me and asked if i wanted to sign up for a free 10$ Gas card promotion. Turns out it was for a cibc-petro credit card but she had no intention of telling me until i found out for myself.

So this just happened about an hour ago.

While filling up gas at petro-canada, a person came to me and asked me if I wanted to take advantage of a promotion for free 5 or 10?$ (i forget) petrocanada giftcard.

I asked her what I am signing up for, to which she replied, 10$ Giftcard.
I asked it again and she said the same thing.
So then I rephrased the question and asked Where my information was going, and she said petro canada.

I assumed it was for a survey/membership so i said sure,
she asked for my DL and she would quickly fill it out for me.
She asked me how long i lived in coquitlam, all to familiar questions for a CC so i got suspicious.

And I did sense her quickness/ not wanting to show me the paper.
Thats when I looked behind her clear clipboard and saw the cibc logo.

The top of the application was covered by the Giftcards being clipped on to the clipboard, so when she handed me the application to sign, i removed the giftcards and saw the checkbox for a Mastercard.

Told her no I do not want to sign up for a master card and I wanted to take the application but she said she must give it back to the company. So I said I dont want you to my info im gonna scribble it out at least. W.e she was hesitant and tried to stop me for doing more scribbling. I wrote a big fat VOID across the paper.

I said okay and left. Driving off i thought fuck that she lied to me once, i dont know what she will do with my info.

Went back and talked to the store cashier and though they know she's with cibc, they didnt know the misinformation/lack of info she was giving. I made it a point to say that she was basically pretending to be with Petro rather than CIBC. I wanted to speak to the manager and kick her out but there was only the cashier.

So I got her to give me back the application. She whiteout-ed everything, I guess she wanted to use it for another victim since she only had a couple applications left or something.

And though it is for a Petro Canada - CIBC no annual fee card and in a sense the info is going to Petro Canada, she knew exactly what I was asking for when I initially asked, What is it for? Where is the information going? but until I found out for myself, she had no intention of telling me it was for a credit card.

Anyways, her agent id # is on the paper. Should I call CIBC and complain about this??

yes you should. it's not even a question in my eyes. that is fraud. They get paid per piece rate, or however many people they can sign up.

Yes sales is hard job, its not for everyone, if you can't do it try harder or find another job. its not right to commit fraud just to get your paycheck.

Most of the time these guys are hired as "Financial Product Representatives" from craigslist. You can call CIBC but 9/10 the jobs are outsourced to a third party co.

I'm so cautious about any of these sign up promotions.
I don't even know or care if some of these are legit or not anymore...

One time I was buying something at The Bay, and signed up something to get an immediate 10% off my purchase.
Then turned out I didn't realize I was actually signing up for a credit card.

After that incident, I was just like
Any time person with a clipboard approaches me asking me to sign anything, I tell them Hell No.

There's always these asian girls (no idea why they always tend to be asian) walking around in Canadian Tire sharing some promotions too.
I always tell them I'm not interested before they finish their spiel..
My very first encounter with them, the girl approached me and started talking. Then gave me this CD wallet/binder thing.
Said it's FREE. Then as she continues talking, I just say oh wait... actually I'm not interested...
Then she literally grabs the CD wallet out of my hand and walks off.

Sign up, put bullshit info so you won't possible get card ($500,000 in debt, get paid minimum wage, should do it), get your free gift card, spend it... THEN complain. If they do approve a card, well... nobody says you have to activate it.

Some of 'em are pretty nice, the ones that I've dealt with at least. I've done tons of sales work so I love it when they're pushy or try to sell me heh. The whole gift card surprise is a real nice tactic, that's what happens when you put people on a 100% commission payment (ie no hourly). I'd do it, scam people for a day or two, make a couple hundred in commission and leave to a different location

IMO I'd never sign up for a CC unless I knew it was zero liability. Last thing you need is a CC you never use being racked up and you never knowing till its too late. $10 of free gas is definitely not worth ruining my credit

did they offer to give you the gift card immediately?

last time someone asked me to sign up for a canadian tire CC and offered me few free gifts on the spot, I took the gifts and filled out the forms with a bunch of fake name, address and info.

This bullshit annoys me.

It's bad enough when I go to a HD or something and its "will this be on your hd cc?" NO. The cash in my hand was the first indicator.

It's worse when I ask for help on the floor and they work a credit card into the conversation.

Better yet is at Canadian Tire when they come around specifically to annoy you, at a time I might add, when I am in YOUR store trying to spend MY money by giving it to YOU. Piss off.

But to have them in your face while you are trying to get gas? And has anyone noticed that Petro Canada has gotten really bad with the upsells? I get used to " oh, did you want a lottery ticket for tonight?" or "hey, if you buy 2 its on sale" Because it has that fake feeling of being kind of genuine. I could almost believe that you really want me to either win the lottery or have a heart attack. But when its "lottery? coffee? chocolate bars 2 for 1? chips? How's the oil? Washer fluid low?"

No dude, I just want gas. Now we get them pounding you for a credit card, where they won't even take no as an answer . This just in Petro Canada...no one feels any loyalty to you. Chevron beat all of you to the "our gas is better" marketing claim, so thats a no. Your coffee sucks, so thats a no. And the rest of the shit you carry, I can get anywhere.

I really dislike having to go to Petro Canada because of the annoyance I have to go through to buy some fucking gas.

Always go to Chevron or Husky.. never had this happen to me.

PS. I wouldn't have scribbled anything out.. I would've taken the application and tore it up infront of her. Also, I would never give a stranger I don't know my DL..

Not really normal tactics. They should at the very least let you know what you're signing up for, and not straight up lying about it.

Yes this was very shady shit. I have actually signed up for my regular usage cc from a booth (at sfu for the spc mastercard), and have no problem just declining or hearing out the promotion etc.

But this one was basically fraud as nabs metioned. She didnt tell me I was signing up for a CC even though I asked multiple times what the info was for. She only stated it was for the giftcard. She lied to me about me not being able to take the application b/c she had to give it back to her office regardless of i decided to cancel/not sign/ etc.

[Hey. ...new to the forums]

One time I got a call from what I thought was my existing CC company. I had been calling them asking to have my interest rate lowered, so when I got a call, from a foreign speaker that I could barely understand, I jumped to the conclusion that she was offering me a better version of my existing card. She wasn't. I ended up with a new CC - which I promptly cancelled
