| Looking to build a desktop Mac PC
Hey guys,
I built a computer many years ago, and I understand the basic components needed to build one, but things change quickly.
If I want to build a computer from parts from NCIX, are there any things I need to buy that are Mac specific?
I think the newest osx is Mountain Lion and I am hoping to run that. Can any desktop run either? Or do I have to cater to Macs needs? Or do I need to install windows, hack it, then install mac? How does it work?

Reading your post.. This is not the route for you. If you want a Mac buy a Mac from Apple. Hackintosh is not for the feint of heart.

I find it ridiculous that every videocard and motherboard out there is only built for PC :S
I also am not interested in your spiel about selling mac computers. Faint of heart? I don't see why I should give up because you say so.

He's saying it's extremely difficult to build your own mac, as acquiring parts that are all mac compatible is a huge hassle and would likely not be worth the time. You can go ahead, but I feel most would advise that if you want a mac, buy a mac. If you want to build a desktop, go PC.

I think Mikroft was just providing some sound advice. If you were really interested in how to run mac OS on a pc you would've put in more effort in the research.

RS isn't Google. Get some basic understanding on the subject before you ask a question. We can help, but don't come here expecting us to hand-hold you through the whole frickin' process.
I'll be a nice guy and get you started. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Hackintosh

Smartass comment? I'm saving you a world of headaches from dealing with hacked drivers, custom software patches, broken system updates, and kernel panics. There is no certified compatible hardware for osx because its not made to run on regular pcs. That's why they term it hackintosh. That coupled with you saying you're not familiar with current hardware I'm recommending you buy a mac since you want to use osx. I gave you sound advice based on the level of technical understanding from your post. I could give 2 shits if you don't want to take our advice.

I looked into it before. Spent all my free time during a weekend researching, and what Mikroft said is true. It's a major headache, and a lot of hardware out there isn't compatible. You also have to be at least familiar with Linux, which I don't think you probably are.
If you browse OSX86 forum boards, you might be able to find a compatible build, but that's as much advice as I can offer you.

running a VM OSX is a nightmare, you wont be able to run a lot of graphics required programs.
running a hackintosh is a nightmare, because hackintosh.

It can be done, but it is not easy. If you have just the right combination of hardware, it might help. But with 'modern' hardware, the best you can hope for is to get into the OSX desktop and screw around a bit. Nothing remotely useful on a daily basis really.

I have built a couple OSX86 computers (different versions and different hardware) and I probably reinstalled the OS about 40 times total in order to get it to work. I made small changes with each installation. I also spent about 50 hours Googling my problems. Most people are not that committed and will probably give up.
The tools you have to work with in OSX are limited compared to Windows. The programs I missed most are the equivalents to Acronis Disk Manager and True Image.
Playing around with OSX86 is fun for people who:
- like to tinker around with computers.
- have a lot of free time.
- have patience.
- like to use Google
- are curious about the MAC OSX
- have an spare computer system to commit to the project.
If you want to attempt this, you should try to make your all components Intel if possible (which is impossible). The hardware to look at are the onboard sound and onboard network.
If you are a gamer (like a lot of the people at this forum), you should remove your latest gaming card and go back to onboard video or a basic nvidia card.
