Something only the most experienced outdoorsmen often realize, even carrying a rifle, a human is not at the top of the food chain in the wilderness.

A grizzly can run 60km/h and has a heart rate of only 14bpm, at that distance, you could shoot the bear through the kill zone and it would easily still get you before bleeding out and going down itself. That's if you even make the shot. Someone I know was told by a Fish & Game officer in Alaska, if you're going to shoot, it's better to actually aim at major bones in the hopes of slowing the bear down than to attempt stopping kill shots.

statistically, bear spray > rifle.. even taking in account the fact that it's only effective under 10 meters.

I don't ever want to be that close to a grizzly.

I still try to convince people of this.... bear spray used properly has been shown to be much more effective at stopping aggressive behaviour by bears (including brown bears). That's not to say that it wouldn't hurt to have a rifle as well, but it's more of a last resort if the bear spray was not effective.

Remember that all the parks including banff, jasper, yoho etc you cannot stop off the highway with a firearm unless you are stopping for an essential service (gas/food etc). You defiantely cannot pack heat while hiking, which is why I've invested in the largest bear spray canister I could find, and wear it on my hip.

Even highly experienced sports-based shooters (hunters, target shooters etc) will have a very low chance at being effective with a high powered rifle, high powered handgun when shooting at a charging/moving bear. There are too many physical and physiological things happening for a human to be accurate in a situation like that.

Love animals so much, but anthropomorphising them is so wrong. You can get away with it and dogs and cats for your own benefit (and theirs) but with bears and wolves it's just fucking stupid.

the problem with bear spray is that you are likely to get yourself as well...especially if the wind is blowing the wrong direction. but...its better than nothing!

When dogs get horny they hump virtually anything... What the fuck do you do when your bear of a pet gets horny? :troll:

That polar bear vid is awesome. Is it possible to de-claw a bear? lol. I swam with a rottie and that thing scratched the shit out of me every time it got close.. I couldn't imagine a bear.

In regards to the bear spray and bear protection

Forest service BC gives all their field employees bear spray, but then they also carry a shotgun that is loaded with a BB round, followed by a slug, BB then another slug, basically your hoping you blind the bear then the slug does the rest
