How NOT to drive a dump truck.

Can't believe there are no threads about the traffic chaos that was Highway 1 this afternoon:

Truck bucket hits Gaglardi overpass - News Hour - Videos | Global BC

I drove by (well, crawled by) not long after it happened - the dumper was fully wedged under the overpass, and torn fully off the truck; he must have hit it at full highway speed. The rest of the truck was up balancing on the jersey barrier along the right shoulder, a good 100' further down the road. Musta been quite the BOOM when it hit!

:20 second mark on coming traffic, the red pick up truck in the fast lane, Fucking Hate when people come to an almost complete stop to see what the fuck is going on. Good way to cause another accident.

the overpass will buff right out =D

tool001 09-14-2012 08:59 PM

the other day,,, getting of hwy, saw a whole bunch of cars,, driving into the construction zone, went the wrong way.. Towards the sand bank... then turning /reversing back..

cant believe so many drivers just follow others without using thr own brain.

im guessing the truck was going down the highway with the bed raised up?

Greenstoner 09-15-2012 01:39 AM

he was caught in the process of transforming

yray 09-15-2012 06:44 AM

60s engineering :fullofwin: ; good thing a new overpass is being built to replace the old overpass

EuterVanWasser 09-15-2012 07:02 AM

I'd put $20 on the driver having a cell phone pinned to his ear and not paying attention.

Good guess, Sherlock.

He must have been going full speed, to tear it right off the frame like that.

Box down, PTO out, leave site. How fucking hard can it be?

Even if he forgot, what, the guy never checks his mirrors?

Sadly, the most he'll get is a traffic violation and insurance premium increase (or the company he works for). Then we all get the pleasure of being around him on a daily basis again.

Oh joy.

did this happen few years back to an overpass in surrey and it collapsed??

Not this one but weird thing is it happened around the same time too? Sept 20th 2011

fliptuner 09-15-2012 07:24 PM

Happened with a garbage truck in Coquitlam. The pedestrian overpass collapsed and the driver died.

Then again in Port Moody.

After the Coquitlam incident I got paranoid driving under overpasses and constantly check that my box is down, even though I know the PTO's out. My box height is pretty close to the legal limit so it's a real concern, especially on newly paved roads and going between N. and W.Van, under the Lionsgate on/offramp.

inv4zn 09-15-2012 11:43 PM

Sorry, what are PTO's?

fliptuner 09-16-2012 12:58 AM

Power take-off - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the case of most HD trucks, it connects the transmission to a hydraulic pump. When the PTO is in, pump fuctions, PTO out, no pump. The pump controls and number of hydraulic attachments beit rams, outriggers, winches, etc.. It's common practice to disengage the PTO when attachments aren't in use, for safety reasons (so as not to be able to use attachments while driving) and cause if you're driving with the PTO in, it gets hot since you're at a high rpm, so it's spinning faster.

There was a pedestrian overpass in Coquitlam that collapsed. The driver of the truck got squashed.

those nvan/wvan overpasses suck. i remember years ago always seeing semi's get stuck, and having backup. I believed that the measurement they had posted was wrong, because it happened once or twice every month, in that exact same spot.

Was a garbage truck driving with his forks up... pulled the overpass down on top of himself.

Just like this:

fliptuner 09-17-2012 09:58 AM

Fuuuuu....

Poor people on the overpass.

E-40six 09-17-2012 10:03 AM

I dont even get how some truck drivers are so oblivious to their truck. The truck drives weird with the box up higher than 1/2" off of the frame
