Diabetes Research

I'm curious to know how many RS'ers know someone close to them that has diabetes?

My own grandmother has diabetes and can't eat so many of the foods that she wants to . It runs in the family but thank god I was not born with it myself.

I'm finally going to do something to contribute to this research. My ride to help fund Juvenile Diabetes is this upcoming weekend and any donations to the cause would be very appreciated. Even a dollar would help
Donate to help a RS'er Ride! Apparently they won't even let you participate if you don't meet the minimum donation quota

If you are not active and don't eat very healthy, you have a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes than someone who is (especially since it runs in your family). Does she have type 1 or type 2? My papa was diagnosed with type 2 shortly before they discovered he also had prostate cancer.

I live and eat like everyone else unfortunately. I've never really paid attention to my diet (as most didn't in their teen years) but now that i'm settling into my mid-20's. This is starting to get more concerning.

Mom wasn't born with it either but now shes finding symtoms appearing and doctor is already warning her of potential onset of type 2 now.

It shouldn't be long before we've got a cure for diabetes.....we are well on our way.....It’s estimated that in only three years, a few companies will be commercializing off-the-shelf stem cell treatments....

My best friend was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes two years ago.

He really liked to drink Coke and it caught up with him. Upon diagnosis he took some classes on eating for diabetics. I was especially concerned because he is Chinese and rice and noodles are commonplace. However, he has adapted well and consequently went from 200 to 150lbs within about 1.5 years.

I'm really proud of him. He took it in stride and has never let the limitations of his diet bother him.

Not sure if what type of diabetes run in my family.
But my Grandma and my dad both have diabetes.

I've always been skinny/slim, active/athletic person, and I naturally have a high metabolism and I'm in my late 20's.
I have trouble gaining weight even if I load up on junk food. I'm not sure should I be worried.

Just because you're skinny/slim, active/athletic and have trouble gaining weight, it doesn't mean you can't get diabetes. If it's genetic, it can still happen to you. Although being athletic and active will help decrease the chances.

You can live a normal and comfortable life even with diabetes. It's all about moderation, portion control and making smarter choices with what you eat/drink.
