city of surrey-911 operator

Hi,

I got an invite to attend a testing session to become a 911 operator. Wondering if anyone here is already an operator or in a similar field of work? If so do you like what you do? Seems to me that this would be a stressful job, and a very depressing work atmosphere.

The starting pay is whats pushing me to pursue this career, and also since its a city job!

Let me know your guys insight.

Thanks

I don't have first hand experience but I knew someone who worked as a 911 operator in surrey and it was stressful/depressing for them. The stuff you hear on the news is maybe 1% of what actually happens. They couldn't tell specific details but lots of suicidal calls and domestic disputes.

They worked varied hours/shift work. They did have opportunity for overtime and made quite a bit. Also need to keep a clean record and keep things confidential.

I thought all the 911 calls were at the E-Comm building next to the PNE?

^ E-comm can dispatch, but usually takes incoming calls and direct them to the correct call centre.

For example, BCAS Vancouver Region dispatch centre is in the tech centre on Broadway and Rupert. The BCAS dispatchers there are the ones who communicate directly with the ground and air ambulance crews.

Hi Z-33,

I was just wondering if you got hired and what the process was like? I have been invited to a critical testing session for a telecommunications operator with the city.

I was trying to find information online and it was saying that the application process concentrates on but is not limited to: previous employment, education, neighborhood inquiries, friends and associates, character reference, personal finances (what?!?!?!?) and drug and alcohol use.

I mean isn't that kind of stepping over the boundaries a lil bit? Especially with the personal finance thing ... I mean WTF.

So yeah any info you have would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

^^ If it's for a 911-operator position.. your practically being hired as part of the police force. Meaning they will turn your life inside out to find out everything about you, and they'll also ask all your friends/family everything they know about you.

You have to be very honest (or atleast seem like it and get past the lie-detector) to work for the police force.
