Five pricey Vancouver properties linked to grow-op

http://www.theprovince.com/news/government+seeks+forfeiture+five+pricey+Vancouver+ properties/7282660/story.html
By KEITH FRASER, The Province September 23, 2012 4:50 PM

The B.C. government is seeking to forfeit five Vancouver properties having a total assessed value of more than $6.7 million and allegedly linked to a major marijuana grow-op.

Police seized nearly 5,700 marijuana plants having an estimated street value of $2 million. Also seized were 154 high-intensity lamps used for the grow-op.

The lawsuit, filed by the director of civil forfeiture, claims that the lamps were being powered by electricity stolen from B.C. Hydro using an electrical meter bypass.

Louie, Mak, Ly and Chu could not be reached for comment.

THE FIVE PROPERTIES:

— A two-storey commercial building at 1201 East Pender, site of a police raid on a major marijuana grow-op, is valued at $1.3 million.

The building is owned by a numbered company, 0880084 BC Ltd. Directors of the company include Soo Kim Louie and Cheuk Mak.

— A two-storey home at 788 West 64th Ave. assessed at $1.8 million,

— A home at 621 East 56th Ave. valued at $814,000, owned by Louie.

— A home at 5790 Granville valued at $1.4 million, owned by Louie.

— A home at 1383 West 64th Ave., valued at $1.4 million and owned by Mak.

If I were growing, I would change locations every six months-year.
But, I have no idea what it takes to set up a grow operation..

But, if Mr. White and Jesse can set up a meth lab in a day... I'm sure this wouldn't be that hard

The rest of the article says that apparently they were using the illicit profits to buy the other houses, pay property taxes, and make property improvements at their business. It also does not mention how much they still owe on these mortgages.

Used to be as long as you paid your bill a fuck would not be given as far as Hydro went. They did bring in some legislation a few years ago that may have effected that though.

2 very helpful sources to locate grow-ops are:

-Heat (Overnight Infra-red scanning by Helicopter)
-Electricity (BC Hydro)

There's the odd occasion where they will investigate a house that is pulling in a TON of electricity and it turns out to be just an old shitty house where people are running the furance day and night to try to keep warming costing them $1000's, but usually it's a grow-op.

power generators are loud, arent they..

open windows is bad idea.. the smell from grow-ops are noticable.. i cant stand the smell from ppl smoking it.. so a grow-op i assume would be worse..

We had a grow up next door to us for awhile in Abbotsford.

Things that were done well:

Never smelled pot at all.
Grass was manicured, and no unusual traffic.

Things that were not done well:

Never saw a wheel on a power meter spin that fast.
There was a slight hum from the fans

The one thing that surprises me is that no one ever builds a flase wall in front of windows. The dead giveaway? All the blinds were constantly pulled shut. Some plywood painted black with a vase and a lamp in front of a window would look way more convincing.

Owned a rental grow op once, it was pretty elaborate.

When we finally found out there was a large industrial fan shooting straight out the chimney to get the smell far away and the entire basement was gutted with hydroponic lights. Of course we couldn't call the cops because the laws at the time meant they'd take the property away from us. Called in my brother's friends and scared the potheads away, tore down the house, and built a new one

Luckily we caught it before the cops did. A few months later the house almost directly across from us got busted. Happens a lot in vancouver I guess

I remember getting a call for a rental house we own and the guy basically said I'll pay you double the rent, one years rent up front and will pay for the electric bill but you can't ask me what I'll be using the house for and you can't come by, lol. I was tempted because we were going to demolish the house anyways but I said "no, thanks" and hung up the phone.

Nope.. I still wouldnt have a grow op right in the city... buy property.. dig out part of the land and bury a bunch of sea cans. Throw a big Whisperwatt (60k watts or so)..
Get a slip tank on a truck and once a week fill up the generator with fuel..
no stealing power.. the only thing you would have to worry about is a helicopter but even that if the sea cans are far enough underground might not pick it up. Sure you would be spending like a grand a week on diesel but you could most likely keep that going for years without any issues
