VW anyone? Hey all, thanks for taking the time to see what this thread is about. I bought this 1982 tracked-out mk 1 volkswagen rabbit swapped '85 scirocco 1.8L 8v engine off craigslist about 2 weeks ago with the hopes of bringing to life as my dream car. I love old VW's, especially the golf's and rabbit, so when i found this posted for $2250, i had to buy it: VWVortex.com - 1984 Rabbit: Need help buying this car ASAP Paid $1500 for it, with the hopes I could bring it back to it's prime. I'm not a racer or anything, but I really can't complain about the flared fenders and the racing seatshttp://images.craigslist.org/5L15Kb5...a205611137.jpg http://images.craigslist.org/5E85Fb5...676da3122a.jpg Let me apologize in advance if I don't know everything or if I call something by the wrong name, I'm learning as fast as I can :) This is my first car I am working on so me and my two good friends that are mechanics are working on this, them and hopefully you guys, teaching me a long the way. Sadly, the previous owner bought it about 6 months ago as is, and if he did anything, he made it worse than it was when he bought it. He doesn't have the keys for the doors, which are different from the igntion and trunk, and doesn't have the fob for the alarm system in the car.. or the previous owners number or email.. Problems I have to fix are the lack of locking doors; the key works for the ignition, glove box, and trunk only, new battery (easy), and an idling problem that seems to be why I lose all power when I accelerate to much at one time.. I've narrowed the idling problem down to a crack in the idle air control valve sensor and a dirty mass air flow sensor which I have cleaned with carb cleaner (research shows it works). Luckily i bought an idle air control valve that's used but in great condition off ebay for $7.50 if you can believe it! Just waiting on it to arrive. The other day I took the trunk lock apart and switched the keys into my driver door lock, then i dremmeled the other driver door keys flush so the key now works for both: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8182/8...4e00342048.jpg Driver side lock with keys removed. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8460/8...a43581e1ac.jpg Driver side brass keys and lock parts after being disassembled. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8310/8...24c84668b1.jpg Disassembled parts and lock of the trunk (right). Trunk keys in driver side lock (left). http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8458/8...e9fba48077.jpg Passenger side door lock before dremmeling, key doesn't fit all brass tumblers. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8179/8...5c69d62798.jpg Passenger side lock after dremmeling, key fits! Two threads I used to figure this out, cus I am new to working on cars: VWVortex.com - How to: Repair or re-key door locks TheSamba.com :: View topic - How to "rekey" VW door handles. A picture tutorial More pics I took of the car: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8041/8...f5af5002e2.jpg engine shot. I like how the only new thing in the car is shining super brightly haha! (alternator) http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8029/8...257481987d.jpg after market fuel line. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8311/8...3c95c9c8b5.jpg sparco racing seats with schroth racing harnesses, and yes, that is a custom rollcage. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8322/8...2e5a85afe1.jpg plus zender rims on low-pro tires and a zender spoiler. the tail lights were painted the same blue as the body, I intend on sanding and clear coating them, or I may look for stock tailights.. as those are not my style. I also put on momo stainless steel pedals that were thrown in with the car when I bought it. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8319/8...b5de908b9a.jpg I found this plug, COLD START INJECTOR, gotta plug that up. -Oh and yes.. this is gonna be almost exactly the same as my thread on vw vortex: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...1#post79097189 |
You got a fucking steal on that. I would have paid that without an engine for that if I had the time/room/money for a project. Stoked to see where this goes! |

This is a very cool car. |
Oh wow!! Side note.. My parents bought a MK1 Rabbit to practice driving LHD when we came to Canada over 2 decades ago. At the same time, my cousin had a Rabbit GTI which ignited my passion for cars (and VW). I would point out every VW on the road. My mom ended up getting a brand new MK2 16v after passing the drivers test. I bought it from her 10 years later, only for it to be totaled by an idiot (chatting on phone) a year later. Since then, I've owned 5 GTIs and now a Tiguan. My dad wants a MK1 Scirocco with an automatic for his retirement present. I don't know where to start.. LOL |
You may also want to check out VWvortex.com Lots of info on MK1/MK2 cars. They also have a very active Pacific North West (Vancouver/Seattle/Portland) section as well. |

too-slow: i loved vw since i was a kid too, and despite all the other cars for sale, i knew i had to get my first vw as my first car.. fate was nice enough to gimme one :D Posted via RS Mobile |
That last pic is the cold start injector. One pin goes to crank signal the other goes to ground remove that bolt sticking out of it and use a banjo fitting to supply fuel to the injector. It looks as tho that engine used to be a CIS-E engine and someone converted it to a digi 2 style system and that may be why the cold start injector was bypassed. If it starts easy when cold then leave it disconnected. Super cool MKI BTW. I had a 77' rocco with a 2.0l bottom end and 1.8l 16v top end bloody thing hauled ass and got wicked fuel mileage. |

Damn, I wanted to snag that thing. I think I even emailed the guy about it. Seems like it went to a good owner though! Enjoy the thing. |

If you want fairly cheap and decent parts, check out Gordon's VW. Autobahn wrecking is also in the complex beside them and can usually get you spare parts that Gordon's is unable to find. You got a good car, though. Makes me miss my plethora of old MK1 and 2's I used to own. :( |
I love it! The Mk1 is my original dream car, which I never bought. I saw a pristine, tastefully modified one last week and it got me dreaming again. At one point I almost purchased a race prepped Mk2 Scirocco. Congrats on this. Have a great time with it. Posted via RS Mobile |
the clean stock ones are beautiful, but with the 2k i had to spend im lucky to even get this 1 |
After it was sitting for a week I decided to take it and insure the bastard, but it wont start. It will start but it wont turn over due to there is no spark going to the spark plugs which are dry and in good condition, any idead or suggestions will be appreciated and i started a thread with a little more info here:NO SPARK mk1 rabbit 85 scirocco 2.0L swap |
sow after 3 days of utter despair and face palming, i was suggested my car may not be getting a spark because or the idle stabilizer, which is cracked on my car. thankfully a week ago before it stopped running i suspected my irregular idle was due to the cracked idle control valve so i ordered one, shud be in soon and i'll hopefully kill two birds with one stone! ill update when it gets in.. on a side note, my window on my driver's side door dropped :okay: gonna have to fix that when i get time this week too. |
fukin awesome thread! Congrats on the purchase. I love Mk1 rabbits. I'm currently involved in a 1.8T AEB swap into my friends '82 rabbit that has been stored for 10 years. I look forward to seeing your progress. <---subscribed y0! |

I did a compression test and changed the spark plugs on my car.. http://www.revscene.net/forums/membe...on-testing.jpg plugs out http://www.revscene.net/forums/membe...8-img-1282.jpg compression 4-1: 179-170-185-180 http://www.revscene.net/forums/membe...9-img-1284.jpg new plugs and just an inquiry about my rear suspension, my bud thinks it's so low that my wheels hit the wheel well over bumps, and the cracks in the body have become bigger for driving it for a total of maybe 4 hours.. http://www.revscene.net/forums/membe...3-img-1288.jpg http://www.revscene.net/forums/membe...5-img-1286.jpg http://www.revscene.net/forums/membe...4-img-1289.jpg now the cracks are reaching the skirts near the rear on both sides :'( |
