Individually, i don't think anyone would think of it as share-worthy.
I'm guessing this is how it all began:
1. Koreans thought it was cool. Big hit in Korea.
2. Korean-wannabes thought it was cool. starts spamming in their own respective regions
3. The unawares start thinking its the next big thing as the korean wannabes are spamming it. They start spamming it too.
4. the chain goes on
while i would normally agree, in this case i don't. SNSD or girls generation, that korean girl band, had a hit that made it to canada and the u.s and what happened was exactly what you described.
In this case though, it's a classic case of a funny video about something we know little baout, with a very catchy dance routine and hook making it viral. It's the exact same thing that happened with soulja boy with that one hit he had and fatboy slim with the christopher walken dancing video he had. I think when something is so silly and has a catchy hook and unique dance moves, if put out properly through the internet, it can really take off

It's this generation's Macarena - the lyrics don't matter, what the song is about doesn't matter, it's just a good dance beat that's sickeningly catchy and obnoxious with some easy-to-learn moves that can be performed even when shitfaced. It's as notorious as it is famous, and it's been mocked and ridiculed and praised with dozens of parodies... and as we know, there's no such thing as bad press. Every time someone makes fun of it, they're just promoting it more.
