| Help on slow Internet Connection
I have a couple questions if anyone has a word of advice to share.
Right now i live in Port Coquitlam around coast meridian and we switched to Telus Optik when we moved here less then a year ago. Ever since we moved the internet has been slow as shit. I do not do a lot of gaming. My computer and the tv is hooked up to the lan and every other device is wireless. The only online game i play on my computer is WoW and it is choppy to the point where it is not enjoyable. I also noticed that sometimes i can not even watch a YouTube video at 1080p and full screen. There are 3 laptops, 2 ipads, and about 4 phones constantly hooked up to the wireless. I completely turned off the wireless this morning and my results were not much different. My best results actually with SpeedTest had the wireless on. I believe the internet is supposed to be 15mbps and im at:
But is there any way i can get more speed out of this internet. I was talking to a family member this morning and he pretty much told the problem may be that there are too many users in this area so the internet gets bogged down quite a bit. I am also posting this at 10:49am so this is not the busiest time of day either.
Any advice on getting my internet faster. I also considered that maybe when the internet was hooked up the telus guy who came did a dodgy job. For the first couple months my lan did not even work with my computer. The internet would constantly go in and out at first. Temporarily i had a wireless USB hooked up but i unplugged it a couple months ago to try and it and the lan works now.
I have no clue if there is anything that can be done, my knowledge is minimal so if you come here saying to this and that there is a good chance you may have break it down a bit so someone like me can understand
Thank You.
Tyler.

| This might be a red herring. Could be your computer that can't keep up with full screen 1080p YouTube. Quote:

| Nope, that shouldn't be it. It's an issue that relates to cable Internet, not DSL.

Thanks for the reply. Talked to telus.
All the lady did i believe was change my wireless password and she said she would monitor the computer for several hours and call me back.
did the command prompt and the same thing keeps popping up in the box.
32 bytes 19ms TTL=47 the odd 20ms comes up.
also have telus optik TV with over 300 recorded shows. thought that might be an issue and my girlfriend says the box is very slow and cuts out sometimes.
my computer is pretty good. before with wow i could open two windows running two accounts on ultra and not lag one bit. just tried it and it wouldnt even let me move. sometimes youtube works on 1080p. before we moved youtube and 1080p had zero issues.

First, did you do this with a computer that's connected by wireless or by wire?
If you did it with wireless, then you need to do it by wire.
Do you know what the IP of your router is? If not, find out.
With your computer connected by wire, open two command prompts and do
"ping 192.168.0.1 -t" or whatever your router IP is, in one window
and
"ping 8.8.8.8 -t" in the other window.
Trying to determine if the problem is in your network or with Telus.
Basically if the ping to your router has no packet loss, but the ping to 8.8.8.8 has packet loss, then the problem is with Telus.
If both pings have packet loss, then the problem is in your network.

Disconnect your optik tv feed on your router and try again, do a speedtest before and after, hopefully it will also reduce your packets loss

If so, there's something wrong within your own network, and it might not have anything to do with Telus at all. Quote:

Is your computer connected directly to the router by cable, or is there another switch or hub in between?

there is a hub. It connects to the wall. Then is wired through the walls to the router room then connected to the modem. Posted via RS Mobile |

Are you sure it's a hub, not a switch? What's the model number?
Hubs are old school, where data is sent from one port to every other port because it's not smart enough to know the actual destination port.
Switches are much better, because the data is directed towards a specific port.

That's my ethernet from my computer to that box. Then from the box it runs a wire through the walls to another box. Then a ethernet cable from the router to the box Posted via RS Mobile |

Are you testing with a laptop or desktop?
If you were using a desktop, switch to a laptop.
If you were already using a laptop, ignore steps 1 and 2.
1.) Connect your laptop to this same box and repeat "ping 8.8.8.8 -t".
2.) You should still see the >8% packet loss.
3.) Then take your laptop over to the router room and connect it directly to the modem/router.
4.) Do "ping 8.8.8.8 -t" again. What's the result?

I think you need to elimate the HUB and try the test again. If you need a hub maybe try the powerline series from Dlink

That's not actually a hub... just a wall jack box.
Actually, here's a stupid question that might not be so stupid.
Was it only your computer that had this problem, or did all the laptops connected by wireless experience the same slowness?
