Reverse Backup Camera

Anyone have any knowledge of which brand/ or model would be best to buy either from online/ebay or locally?

Ive skimmed through a bit of ebay and sites but this one caught my eye the most
Eonon -Low Price!!! Camera, Car DVD | Car Monitors | Car GPS Navigation|

Can anyone share what they have ? and where they got it from and how the quality is?

Ive been to N-Motion they have 4 kinds, around 80~110$ and all decent but looking for the best buy, they also charge $80 for installation which I will probably go to get it done after I find a camera

The specs of this camera are definitely worth it for the money. It should suit the purpose. The only thing I'd be cautious is about the mounting. If you plan it put it in a keyhole, you have nothing to worry about. However, if you plan on mounting it above the license plate etc, take note of the bracket design. It seems that you make the angle adjustment by bending the metal bracket? This seems kind of ghetto. There may be similarly priced ones available (eBay) with better mounting brackets.

By worry you mean if someone where to steal my camera correct?

If i mounted it to the keyhole " where i put the key to open the trunk , it wouldnt make much difference if I have a button on my car remote to open it right?

Could you share some links off ebay if you have the chance?
Im just looking for the best buy
price / quality wise vi

"edit sorry for noob question "

but the higher the pixels the better right?

And the ideal place to put the camera would be in the middle correct i drive a 2012 corolla the keyhole is more to the right

By "worry" I mean mounting angle using the supplied bracket. Usually they provide you with angled spacers which will allow you to choose any angle you want via the keyhole mounting. How I had it in my old setup when I had a reverse camera in my trunk keyhole is that I had 2 methods of opening the trunk; the first being the pull latch on the driver's side floorboard, the second was that I installed an actuator and hid the activation button in the glove box.

Correct, the more pixels = more lines of resolution = better picture.

eBay prices will almost *always* be cheaper than best buy etc. Most of the generic stuff from big box stores is just re-branded stuff from China. Here's some examples. Just remember to confirm the hole diameter and also determine if you require a mirrored image or not. Some cameras will do it via hard settig and some head-ends will give you the option of it via software setting.

I would avoid Eonon like the plague. Its a terrible brand.

One thing that has not been touched on is the camera's waterproof rating. MOST Ebay cameras have a very poor waterproof rating. I can guarantee that your new back up camera will maybe last you 8-10 months if you are lucky. Even the higher end 'overseas' brand like Boyo barely last a year in Vancouver's wet weather. trust me, we have installed literally hundreds of cameras from $50 all the way up to $500. The absolute best camera for clarity, mounting design, waterproof ability and price is the Pioneer ND-BC5. Local price is $199 which is more than ebay by a little bit and probably less after shipping, brokerage, duties and taxes.

If you want to avoid wasting time and money and you want a toug camera with a great image that lasts you years and years, please spend a bit more and you won't be dissapointed. You get what you pay for.

Not to throw water over anyone, but my $13 (incl. shipping lol) reverse camera from dealextreme looks exactly like that one and has lasted me 3+ years so far.

The metal bracket has held up fine, connectors and stuff are fine, image quality is what it was when I first bought it...

I honestly could not justify a $200 pioneer camera when there were alternatives available at 1/20th the price...

And for me, it's been great. It was mounted very low to the ground because that's where my license plate was attached to (bumper, not trunk lid). Countless car washes, etc.

I had a cheap chinese camera I bought on Ebay about a year ago and it was fooked right out of the box. I sent it back to get it replaced under warranty and they sent back a brand new one which was actually nicer. I hooked it up and the image was ok but the colours were 'meh'. That pile of shit lasted 4 months through the winter last year then stopped working. I didn't want to wait to warranty it so I bought a cheapie from a local shop. THAT thing just died on me last week and they won't warranty it.

I'm done with cheap, shitty cameras. Gotta pay to play!

+1 Spent around $30 for mines from China, been using it since 2009 and it still runs great......

Totally true. I used to have a BOYO and it was crap. Even Alpine is crap.

I now have the Pioneers on both my cars. The time and money I wasted on that other crap, I'll never get back.

The Pioneer is the only camera I know of that is still Made in Japan.

BTW, I got both Pioneers from Mike and Keith's shops.

I'm in the market for a reverse camera. Do you remember which model you have and can you post of pic of the screen image for us?

Cman333 10-01-2012 01:32 PM

Yeah, I'd definitely say we've dealt with our fair share of reverse cameras. Best one I've installed is the Pioneer. Nothing worse then having to keep replacing a customers camera every few months.

Some people luck out and have them last years. Others are plagued and have to replace it every couple months.

I'm also looking at getting one but haven't seen any reviews on the brand Nmotion is selling "Betoptek".

Link to Mike and Keith shop? I don't mind paying a couple bills if it's quality.

This was my old Deal Extreme backup camera. It was like $15 with free shipping

http://members.shaw.ca/volvoman/inde...erseCamera.jpg

It had angled threaded inserts for different mounting angles

http://members.shaw.ca/volvoman/inde...rseCamera4.JPG

This how I mounted it. I used a hole saw and mounted right in the middle.

http://members.shaw.ca/volvoman/inde...rseCamera2.JPG

It was an average camera, blurry during the day, master of noise at night. However, it was only $15 and it worked the entire time I had it.

inv4zn 10-02-2012 09:36 PM

lol! aren't you technically not allowed to modify plates?

TypeRNammer 10-02-2012 10:12 PM

Mike installed a Pioneer back up camera on my car, that shit is pretty bad ass at any time of the day and night!

Ordered one from dealxtreme.. Wonder how long my 20$ will last .. Now I just need an idea of where to mount the camera

ToddPacker 10-03-2012 01:14 AM

all i see in these packages is just the rear mount camera..

where do you guys hook up the video out?

MG1 10-03-2012 08:53 AM

^to navi screen or external monitor

most double din or decks with screen have various inputs - usually one dedicated to backup camera.

On my commuter car, the camera turns on as soon as you go into reverse. Kind of annoying at times. The system in my truck is set up so I choose whenever I need it.... always on. I also have Blackvue hooked up to the screens.

AVS_Racing 10-08-2012 04:26 PM

anyone run cameras with external screen? any good recommendation for screens? my dad wants one for his car, but not gonna put in a double din

We sell a lot of that same stuff for around the same price with full local warranty as well. :)

zEek 10-15-2012 10:20 AM

Quick noob question..
Wiring the cameras 12V wire to the reverse gear wire is for the power? Or for switching my headunit to produce the image, so I don't have to select camera itself, it'll just go automatically
I have a JVC KW AVX 840 unit

Thx
