Someone on the Canada finance reddit described it perfectly -- I'm totally paraphrasing here but essentially saying how in Europe they still follow the conservative approach to building/land ownership monopolies where renters are treated as assets to the upper class, and the government directs rent top ups for the below market rent they provide to those very renters. The working poor receive subsidized rent while the unproductive land owners receive their equivalent top up.

This keeps both the "poor" housed, and the rich landowners happy, a dual welfare approach.

The less you spend on housing the more you can spend on what really matters, living! Same paradox we've discussed for over 300+ pages. If your housing in Sweden / Austria / Some EU countries are flat across the board around $1-2K monthly for a rental that can support a 3-4 person household. That $8K vs $12K lifestyle will be insanely different.

Household making $12K Net with a $3K rent in a 1BR would have to shell out $6K/month for a duplex/house. Netting about $6K/month on disposable income.

Compared to a household that Nets $8K with $2K all-in costs for a duplex+. They can make 50% less, but due to housing timing they have the same quality of life as someone that makes 50% more. Furthermore, they're owning compared to renting.



It's concerning in the long-run because all the younger high earners are incentivized to fuck off somewhere where the cost of housing is lower or earning is higher to justify rent costs. Low income earners have to move to lower cost of living cities or countries to survive. Leaving a lack of top level talent + retail/service workers.

She thought they were just being nice, but I told her it's because they think she's 'their people.'

Speaking to Church's it's wild how quickly some of these locations changed their staff from Pinoys to FULL brown staff, literally out of no where.

The location on Lougheed and Madison for years was fully staffed by Titas and Pinoys, then out of no where the staff all changed to Indos.

I've noticed this happening at a ton of places that used to be run by Pinoys, I'm dumbfounded how things can change like that so quickly, and the whole staff?

The quality and service seems to drop precipitously when this happens as well. The Titas would hook you up with free sauces, maybe some extra chicken, meanwhile Manpreet won't even give you a free paper bag :lol

You know why? Cuz buddy guys buys their job. They own the store, new buddy guys pays the immigration company and gets referred to buddy guy owners to work there, both businesses gets a cut.
