we went through 3 different companies for commercial pickup, WM was the worst and the strictest when it came to what they would accept. if your garbage was sticking out of the top of the bin even a little bit they will hit you with an overage fine that costs more than your entire monthly bill. we also tried waste connections, and now we use NSD which is a local company. im not sure if they have the capacity to do highrises, but they are a lot more negotiable when it comes to rates and their service is more mom and pops.

FWIW, garbage and green bin collection was supposed to happen on Wed, and I had 4 week's worth of trash in both bins (because of the snow day non-pick up + other crap issues I mentioned earlier). Garbage collection came, but green bin collection did not show up, and still didn't show up on Thurs. I'm running out of room now. FailFish

Last year in the summer months, I think the record at my place was -- green bin collection was 1 - 3 days late for something like 6 - 7 consecutive weeks. That is to say -- they came every week, but they kept coming late for like a month and a half. FailFish

EvoFire 02-02-2024 12:06 AM

Sounds like my place. If pickup was Thurs or Fri, guaranteed to be late and picked up the next day. It seems like the green bin trucks up time is pretty compromised as they've said they have had reliability issues. Also for the families that actually throw their food scraps in the bin, shit gets heavy and disgusting real quick. I wonder if the trucks can't actually handle the heavy wet compacted shit that's in the green bin.

Then we just got fed up. Took our time to find local alternatives. It was a day or two worth of work and more we have multiple accounts to track. But damn. So much better. In one extreme case, we went from single pick up weekly to 2. It was cheaper than WM. No fine ever. And same price throughout the years until 2 years ago, the owner of company wrote individual letters to their clients saying that inflation had pushed so much that they couldn’t operate if they didn’t raise pricesby 15%. I kindly agreed without blinking an eye because guess what? It was still cheaper than what we were paying WM!

Strata living here in East Van. We had WM from the very start when this place finished back in 2018. It wasn't by choice, the developer set it up. Same story nickle and diming us even having the audacity to say we needed to pay for them to come back out when they missed pickups like wtf. We kept weighing the option of breaking the contract or riding it out and chose the ladder then switched to a smaller local company Disposal Queen. Its been about 2 years now and aside from the admin office sometimes being absolutely terrible at getting back to you about things the actual boys that do the pickup have been absolutely fantastic. This is our 2nd winter with the company and both years they didn't miss a beat picking up our stuff even during snow.

About COV pickup though I always found it interesting. Missed pick up calls have always been one of the top 3 calls for us and my parents and inlaws have both lived in Vancouver since the 70's. Both addresses have never ever had an issue whatsoever with pick ups. Combined between the 2 at least from memory in my adult life the past 20 years there has been maybe 2 missed pick ups at each place.

So it’s everywhere throughout Vancouver then.

Because it’s the exact same in my area, literally every week get thay pop-up from the Van collect app saying my shit wasn’t picked up and to leave it out..

How can you say under contract when you consistently cannot deliver service.

Traum 02-02-2024 10:21 AM

So the green bin finally got picked up this morning.

From chatting with my neighbour, apparently CoV missed everyone's green bin collection on Wed (in my area) -- the day when it was supposed to happen. But then yesterday, green bins were collected on the opposite side of my street, but the collector dudes only drove thru to pick up in one direction, and did not drive back to pick up in the opposite direction (which is where I was). So they drove back again today to finish off the half-a$$ job they did yesterday.

It is a matter of incompetence? of not giving a shxt? or just plain old getting overwhelmed for one reason or another? I honestly don't know. But this service quality is definitely lacking.

Hondaracer 02-02-2024 10:22 AM

That’s what happens when you contract out everything.

twitchyzero 02-02-2024 10:25 AM

they've dropped off like a rock since covid

they do every other week for greenbin collection over winter since last year, yet want to hike tax by 7.5%? Lol

Hondaracer 02-02-2024 10:33 AM

I don’t even put anything out now on those weeks between garbage where it’s only recycling.i don’t care

I’m just gonna call the city and get the bigger garbage bin and start throwing everything in the garbage as opposed to taking the time to separate it anymore.

Which company did you swtich to? I'll seriously consider switching next month. WM has us locked in a 3 year deal but we're going to cancel on account of their bad service to date (not to mention their subcontractor destroying our gate haha)

They probably ran out of time to do both sides, or the truck was full.

Green bin is not contracted. CoV owns the damn thing which makes it even more frustrating. The recycling is contracted and actually more competent with getting to pickup despite only taking contracted amounts and no more.

Wouldn't you want to make sure they pay out for the gate first?

For sure. But next month we could at least start the process of getting quotes, etc.

Like last year they switched to every other week pickup for green bin for some random weeks in the winter. Seems very sudden and this message was not there last week. I know people who also said one side of the street was picked up and the other side still hasn't been picked up and won't be until next week.

"Important reminder: Green bin collection every second week

Until the end of February, green bin collection will occur every 2 weeks and will line up with your regular garbage day. Weekly green bin service will resume the week of March 4."

The sushi place behind my old workplace uses waste connections and their garbage smelled awful. Pretty sure they were throwing out like old fish or dirty styrofoam but the whole alleyway smelled like the ocean :lol

Just in my area within a 2-3 block radius there's two M2 garaged parked, a 370Z, a Accord 2.0T on Rays, a lowered OEM+ MK7 GTI, a modded pig nose WRX, all parked on the street. Lots of car enthusiasts around.

You live in one unit and rent out the other 2. Your mortgage will be only around 2k a month.

My buddy bought a house in Langley 8 years ago when he was getting married. Cost 780k. Nice house but the only way they could afford it was because it had 2 suites. The house has more than doubled in price and the rent has done similarly. His 2 suites now pay his mortgage. His plan now is to use his wife as a first time buyer and buy a second smaller older house with one suite. Reno the house and move there. The rent from his old place and the suite will pay the mortgage on his new place.

Hondaracer 02-04-2024 05:16 PM

Pretty sure that’s not how first time home buyer works.

You are probably right. We were pretty drunk with your wife's cousin when he was talking about it.

Hondaracer 02-05-2024 06:51 AM

If your name is on title or on the mortgage, your SOL for first time home buyer as far as I understand
