| RIP WRT54GL
After owning a WRT54GL with DD-WRT for more than 4 years, my router has past away today. Even though it had problems keeping up in the last year (50mbps connection), it was solid, and a true beast. The best router I've ever owned. Which comes the next question, what would be a solid replacement for the WRT54GL?
REQ'
- PREFER DD-WRT/Tomato compatible
- Dual Band N
- PREFERENCE goes to Linksys, but don't mind other reputable brands as long as it's good
- <$100
- USB Port, may run a NAS in the future
Im currently looking at the Linksys E4200 and the Asus Black Diamond RT-56U, both are DD-WRT compatible. Anyone have experiences with them?

I have the aSUS. never disconnected once, I would say I'm very happy with it..

i also have the linksys wrt54g...
this thing is a brick! with dd-wrt firmware, i never get disconnects

are both a lot better than the WRT54G, provided you have an N device.

Is DDWRT that much better? Running Tomato on the gf's router and she has to power cycle it almost daily

I still use my WRT54GL and its still very good to this day. I'm thankful towards myself back when I had to purchase a router and randomly chose this one.

WRT54G series is arguably the best G routers ever made. People whom have used it swear by it and have purchased several for backup incase they discontinue it. Quote:

Posted via RS Mobile | I powercycle mine like once a year thats only when there is an issue with my cable modem. Check if the firmware is updated or if that doesn't work, give DD-WRT a shot.

Only E4200 V1 is DDRWT compatible. V1 can be found but only in refurbished form as they only sell V2 now. I'm still on my DIR655. Rock solid and no need for custom firmware.
If I were to get another router it'd be the Asus RT N66u.

I moved from a DD-WRT WRT54G to an ASUS N56U. It's a bit over your budget, but I don't miss anything that DD-WRT offered that ASUS doesn't..
My parents are still running a WRT54G that I setup for them.. probably 10 years ago

I still have a WRT54GL kicking around with Tomato in the basement. That thing never needs a reboot. I've a E4200V1 with Tomato (Shibby) for the main router.
N56U has 3rd party firmware support and as far as I know no official DD-WRT support. Check out the RT-N66U instead as someone else suggested.

RT-66U is out of my budget. I am still deciding between the E4200 and DIR655 (it's not dual band though).

If you're ok with refurbished then get the e4200 v1. Supports dual band and ddwrtor tomato shibly which was what I was using before.

RT-N56U doesn't have DD-WRT or Tomato support. It's a solid router even without DD-WRT. 5ghz range is a little limited, but the 2.4ghz range is very good.
I bought mine in September for $86+tax with free shipping from ME. Price matched an amazon.ca deal.
Don't cheap out on your router. You use it everyday and it makes a huge difference in speed and stability of your internet access. It's the best bang for your buck out of all computer related parts you buy.

I'm not planning to cheap out. Just being cautious about what I buy. Not sure if I should settle with the e4200 since its refurbished.

I'm currently using a D-link DIR-825. Dual band with USB. I had problems with DD-WRT until I upgraded the firmware, and now it runs like a tank. My only complaint is its range.
