ICBC Axes 250 Positions

ICBC cuts more than 250 positions after scathing review - News1130
Quote:
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is pleased to see ICBC trimming the fat from its top-heavy management structure after a damning review of the provincial insurance agency.

Eight vice presidents will be laid off, as will people in 250 other positions, mostly in management.

"The bottom line here is ICBC really is rationing down that spending; it's got to happen. They just could not continue to blow that at the executive level, the management level, which is your most expensive form of labour," says Jordan Bateman with the CTF.

Despite ICBC saving $29 million by making the cuts, you won't see an impact on the insurance premiums you pay.

"You know, it's not perfect," admits Bateman. "[But it] is a step in the right direction. I want to make sure that we're supportive of that."

are icbc employees unionized? If so there's no way they'd allow this.

saves 29 million by taking 250 jobs from people... dosnt cut insurance rates at all... so ICBC thinks the right direction is to keep more money for itself and not help anyone out

Mostly Management positions, meaning that it's non-unionized.

It's just a title, doesnt mean they get millions. My company is way smaller but the head of each division gets called VP. Of course that doesnt mean ICBC VPs arent getting millions adn doesn't mean they're redundant, I don't know how much they make. But my friend is a programmer there getting paid 20K more to do the same job as my other friend who is a programmer for a multnational company. And the former has less power to change/fix things, probably cause it has to pass thru so many VPs

You think that's outrageous?

If I remember correctly Air Canada has thirty something VP's.

ICBC are such crooks, and its not like they have no money. If I remember correctly also Surrey Central City building and some other fairly large real estate properties are owned by ICBC as well.

Air Canada is nation wide?

We're talking the difference between 24,000 employees and 5000.

saw 8 VP's and i'm thinking some positions of VP have to be made up, like the simpsons episode where a future lisa is president and appoints bart "secretary of 'keeping it real' "

These 3 combined. The amount of money they bring in and there probably is a VP of sales and a VP of marketing etc, stuff a normal company that doesn't have a monopoly would need to put in competitive wages to steal the best of another company. Does ICBC need the best VPs in sales or marketing? Where else am I going to go?

It's not like we have a choice for auto insurance here in BC. As long as I can save money, they could have one VP overseeing the entire company for all I care.
