The Skyactiv-D engine will show up on the option sheet after the Mazda6 sedan goes on sale in January with its 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine. The move makes Mazda the first Japanese manufacturer to offer a diesel engine in the mid-sized segment in the US (the Volkswagen Passat also offers one), and the company says the Skyactiv-D-powered Mazda6 will also benefit from the manufacturer's brake energy regeneration system, i-Eloop.

The vehicle will be available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, and Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy estimates are still pending, as are official power figures. Expect to hear more solid details once the the vehicle launches in January.

Meanwhile, the 2014 CX-5 will offer buyers a larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine in Touring and Grand Touring models, in addition to the current 2.0-liter four-cylinder offered across its entire range of trim levels. The new engine delivers 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque (up from 155 hp and 150 lb/ft for the 2.0-liter) and shuttles power to the ground via a six-speed automatic transmission. The EPA expects to see 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway from front-wheel-drive models. Those numbers slip to 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway on all-wheel-drive models.

I would fart rainbows if a diesel wagon comes out. And shit pots of gold if the next Mazdaspeed6 comes as a diesel. Very much looking forward to this... this car will look amazing lowered with a set of BBS wheels. The rear end kind of reminds me of the Lexus GS350, which is another car that I'm liking a lot.

Needs a new/aftermarket grill... Those horizontal slats are not working for me but swap it for a honeycomb like grill like on the CX-5 and I might be looking at my new car :fullofwin:

Timpo 11-29-2012 03:30 PM

well Skyactiv diesels are very high revving(for diesel) so it's ok

unit 11-29-2012 03:33 PM

hmm i was expecting the diesel to come to the cx5 as well for 2014.
its already used on the cx5 in europe i believe.

Stick the diesel in the CX-5 with 6spd manual and 4wd and i'm trading in the speed3.

donjalapeno 11-29-2012 05:36 PM

its not THAT good looking, its good looking compared to the new camry but the new fusions and accords shit on this in terms of looks.

GabAlmighty 11-29-2012 05:43 PM

Seems like the diesels are slowly coming this side of the ocean... Can't say I'm not excited.

A diesel Mazda 6 is cool and all, but it's this news that really caught my eye

The CX-5 is one helluva great CUV that handles like no other on the market at the moment. It lacks power however, so a power boost will make this thing an absolute blast to drive. If only they made the stick available with AWD.

damn im not at all a fan of Mazda but that is sick

sonick 11-29-2012 07:00 PM

Lovin' the lovin' for the potential of a 6spd diesel wagon.

Finally the automakers are realizing that the easiest way to get the mileage increase is not to make better gas cars but to sell more diesels.

I went on Ford's UK website just after my mom bought her focus and found out that you can get a proper wagon ("estate") with a 6-spd dual clutch tranny mated to a 2L turbodiesel.

WHY DO WE NEVER GET THE NICE THINGS?!

+1, just curious what design features distinguish "the up to date interior" in your eyes?

I think it is more elegant than the Fusion, and better looking than the Accord in the rear, where the taillights make the Accord look like a Genesis. The front of the Mazda also has more character than the Accord's.

The interior looks pretty up to date to me. The only niggle is the small navigation screen, but a bigger screen is supposed to be coming to the US - this is a Euro-spec model we're looking at in the pictures.

!Aznboi128 11-30-2012 09:35 AM

^ that the nav is the big thing for me. I like how all the new cars is now integrated, the mazda 6 is still a double din which is great for aftermarket but most new cars you really shouldn't have to.

Werd. The touchscreen nav is still ridiculously small.

unit 11-30-2012 11:39 AM

yeah its small by todays standards.

also the cx5 will probably not get 6spd awd. you dont really see that config on any suv these days. i wanted the cx5 but the two flaws with the car are the small touch screen and the weak motor. the 2014 model solves one of those problems.

might also wait to see the new forester.

Eh... It depends how you look at it. It's an integrated unit in my car and it limits what I can do with my car. Luckily a system exists where I can disable the stereo portion from the rest of the car and install something else without affecting the HVAC portion, but it's still a bit of a pain. I know 99.999% of the population don't care about modifying cars, but having that big integrated unit is a pain to work around when installing stand alone ECU's while keeping my stock HVAC system in place.

But I'm pretty sure I'm in the miniscule minority with this complain. :P

You mean people buy a BMW not for the badge?

:troll:

Akinari 11-30-2012 04:55 PM

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the new F30's interior layout, which makes the car feel cramped, visually. The E90 had a no-nonsense, business-like interior that was clean, classy and down to earth. Having driven the new F30s I can say with confidence I much prefer the interior of my E90.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but out of all the interiors posted above, I prefer the 6's interior. It's the cleanest interior of them all. I originally thought the CX-5 had a bland interior judging by the photos, but once you sit inside one and actually see all the minor details and sculpted lines, it's very nice.
