Wheel widening / custom barrels ?

Anyone here have experience with getting a set of 3 piece wheels widened?

If so which shop did you go to, and what did they charge / what method did they use (E.I New / custom barrels or widen current ones)

For reference i got some RE-Amemiya AW7's (Made by Desmond) Im looking to get them all widened by 2 inches.

Any input appreciated. Thanks! So far i shot a email to Greens automotive and Kodiak Wheels since none were open on the weekend.

AVS_Racing 12-16-2012 09:38 PM

are they welded together? from my research depending on size barrels, they are roughly around $200+ each. so its pretty much $1000 before any refinishing and new bolts

TurboFC3S 12-16-2012 10:08 PM

Thats what im not sure about actually. Some are 3 peice but under the silicone they are welded. I havent taken the tires off / taken the rims apart to check yet.

Im hoping to find a place that sells outer lips which they can just drill the same bolt pattern as my current inner lips.. if mine are not welded that is lol

westopher 12-16-2012 10:27 PM

Brotiform will do it to any size for 1800. Memoryfab in Cali will do it too, but not sure of the price. From what I have heard you are probably better to ship them out than do it locally.

TurboFC3S 12-16-2012 10:32 PM

1800 a WHEEL or 1800 for all 4? Lol Wheres that place located?

westopher 12-16-2012 10:50 PM

1800 for all 4 obviously. It doesn't cost more for lips and barrels than a whole wheel. They are in California as well.

TurboFC3S 12-16-2012 11:00 PM

ok yeah thats what i thought lol. If im going to get fully custom barrels, id get a step lip to make these rims 18's :)

percevil 12-17-2012 11:52 AM

Yeah I was looking into this as well.
So no one local can do this?
I was thinking of calling Panther or Greens to see it they do this kinda work.
Shipping alone on 4 wheels round trips gonna cost a pretty penny alone.....

AVS_Racing 12-17-2012 12:42 PM

$1800 + shipping + a set of used wheels, Might as well order a set of brand new wheels to your spec.

GabAlmighty 12-17-2012 12:52 PM

Give Panther a call

What wheels are we talking here. I've worked with many 2-3 piece wheels and have widened both my bbs rm and my bbs rs. It's easy to do if you have any mechanical competence. I wouldn't ever pay a shop to do it unless I was getting custom powder coating or something
Posted via RS Mobile

Edit: I saw which wheel. Check out titanium touch.de and check on there. They will make lips for your application and cheaper than anywhere state side

westopher 12-17-2012 02:30 PM

Keep in mind Bbs rs and rm parts are easy as fuck to find. He will probably have to have someone actually build him barrels.

That's what i'm contemplating, $1800+ shipping is about 2/3rds the cost of a set of new wheels, but would be unique though.
I'm trying to have it done locally or like 320I said, if I can get the parts, i'd do it myself.

Kodiak Racing Wheels - Custom lightweight race wheels for performance and racing [Contact]

Kodiak out in Langley.
Expensive.

Or, if you have basic motor skills and free time
Aftermarket replacement lip : VR Wheels WebStore, Presented By VR Motoring

I forget the username. But that guy on RS with the blue IS300 and now drives a cressida. He's redone his before. Not hard.
I've also done this. Not hard. I made my Veilside Andrew's ugly as fuck before putting them back together, but they held up.

falcon 12-17-2012 04:59 PM

Greens will do widening. Usually if there is silicone it's not welded as that is there to keep air from escaping.

s300ae?

TurboFC3S 12-17-2012 05:16 PM

Thanks guys. I will check out those links. Now that i have done more reasearch on my rims and widening options im looking to get a new lip since my rims are true 3 peice. I know kodiak is expensive as fuck. And the rims are re-amemiya aw7s they are very rare and are one of my favorite rims. If i could find custo. Outer barrels for the front 2 i can run those in the rear then just stick my rears up front. Or step lip to 18s if it isnt way too expensive lol

Lol thanks for mentions..

As far as the wheel modding market locally, it sucks.
Others have mentioned great options.
Also check out wheelflip.com and CZwheels.

Count your bolts and PCD, you might be in luck and have other brand lips that might work for you.
Vrwheels have a decent selection of lips and good prices.

Persch&partner
Tuner shop
Black forest industries
Kodiak
Rotiform
Memoryfab

Those are all places you might be able to source parts from off the top of my head

wouldn't it be cheaper to just sell these and get another set in bigger/wider specs?

JordanLee 12-18-2012 12:59 AM

I think some are getting confused between rebarelling and widening.

For 2-3 piece wheels (Ie. BBS RM/RS, LM etc) you can order or change the inner/outer lips to widen and change the offset to fit your specific needs. This is pretty common and easy to do yourself given like S300ae said, just buy the lips and build them up yourself. You can even step a 17 up to an 18 given the lips were specifically made for the purpose. VR, Kodiak (used to do it), Tunershop all sell the pieces and hardware.

However, some companies in the US can physically remove the lips off 1 piece wheels and weld on aftermarket lips to widen them. This involves essentially redoing the whole wheel and balancing, throwing them on a lathe to smooth it all out.

I wanted to widen my Regamasters...one day.

Rebarreling is very common on steel wheels. If there are any dubbers on here, they usually widen corrado steelies. It's also known as rebanding.

If you are considering actually customizing your 17" set to 18", you'll need custom barrels and lips. Although it can get quite complicated. I can go into greater detail but I honestly don't know anything about your specific wheel.

I dont think people understand this but these rims are rare as hell lol. They were only made on special order by a small shop in japan, and usually only came in 17x8.5 / 17.9.5 +35 or +42. They made them in 18's as well, but not very many so they are impossible to find lol.

Since they are rare, and they look great on rx7s that is why i want to keep them and widen them a bit. They defenatly are not for everyone , but i personally love the look of them if they are in minty shape/

Your other option is, I can always import you this set and you can use the barrels and flip them however you like
